William Finney IV1,2
M, b. circa 1750, d. before 27 January 1806
Birth* | circa 1750 | William was born circa 1750 at Accomack Co, VA. |
Land inherited* | 1766 | He inherited land in 1766. No land was mentioned in the 1766 will of William Finney II, wife Joana, but he made a reference to 2 sons of his dec'd son William III without giving their names. Presumably the elder of the two grandsons was a William IV, who inherited the entailed land. In 1806 this William Finney IV, wife Euphamy, left the southwest part of his land to a son Thomas Watts Finney and the balance, which was the home place, to his son William V. After the intestate death of Thomas W. Finney the property was surveyed in 1875 for a division and the house & 58 acres went to Susan C., the wife of John P.L. Hopkins, but later in that year the Hopkins' sold to Charles P. Finney. In 1897 he left a long will, but it was renounced by his widow Maggie S. and two years later a commissioner sold this part to a brother John T. Finney, who in 1905 left to John T.F. Rogers. It has since gone out of the family and had other owners and in 1947 it was purchased by Byron O. & Dorothy M. Bonniwell of Wachapreague. The house is A60A, called the Finney Place, with bricks marked TWF - DB - 1813, which was a few years after Thomas W. Finney inherited the land. In 1853 William Finney V left his 557 acre plantation to his son William and then to his heirs. William Finney VI died in 1886 and was succeeded by a son Henry O. Finney. The site A60B, as nearly as can be determined, is approximately the site of the orginal Finney home on the tract and continued as the home place, down to recent times, but no old house is now in existence (1951).3 |
Land gave* | 1778 | He deeded land as a gift in 1778 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that William Finney IV deeded 200 acres at Wallops Neck, near Chincoteague Inlet, to his brother John Finney, solider, for his natural life.4 |
Marriage* | circa 1780 | He married Euphamia Fletcher, daughter of Henry Fletcher Sr. and Leah Corbin, circa 1780.5 |
Will* | 29 December 1804 | William made a will on 29 December 1804 at Accomack Co, VA. In his will William Finney Sr. gave to wife Euphamy Finney riding carriage & carriage man Plato. To son Thomas Watts Finney part of the land where I now live it being part of the land whereon George Wise now lives bounded by… George Wise's peach orchard, Isaiah Jester's peach orchard, the market road, Garret Topping's peach orchard & the land of William Boggs. To son Thomas my Negro man Audrin & a large looking glass I bought of Levin White's estate. To son William Finney the residue of the land I now live on. To son William Finney Negro man Phillip & large looking glass I bought of Richard Cave Jones & my still. Biography* | 1830 | Peter D. Corbin was listed as a head of household in the 1830 Census, age 20-30 (actually 23) with a wife of the same age. There was another white male of that same age and another white female of that same age living with him. This was likely his brothers or sisters since his father had died in 1815 leaving many small children. There was 1 daughter under 5, possibly Sarah Ann, and 4 slaves. In 1840 he was 30-40 (actually 33) with a wife 40-50 (b.c. 1790-1800), 2 sons under 5, 1 son 5-10, 1 daughter 5-10, 1 daughter 10-15, 1 daughter 15-20, 1 other white female 30-40 (this could have been his wife with the older female a relative), 1 free negro and 3 slaves. There is some confusion about Peter Dennis Corbin Sr.'s twin sons. The 1850 Census shows Samuel T. and Caleb B., both born circa 1847. The 1860 Census shows Thomas H.B. and Henry A.W., both born circa 1847, but does not show Samuel T. and Caleb B. The only obvious solution is that the first set of twins died before the 1860 Census and the ages of the second set of twins were reported incorrectly in the 1860 Census. Maybe they were age 3 and not 13. |

Land Division of* | 8 July 1841 | Capt. Peter Dennis Corbin Sr. was named in a division of land on 8 July 1841 at Milligan Land, Holdens Creek, Acc Co, VA. In obedience to a decree rendered 22 Feb 1841 in a suit in chancery then pending between Noah G. Duncan & Louisa his wife plantiff vs Peter Corbin & wife et. al. defendants, I have surveyed the land in the proceedings of that cause situated in Acco. Parish near Pocomoke River (called Milligan Land) and ascertained the content to be 248.56 acres. I also laid out 146.802 acres of land and marsh on the wester side of said tract including all the buildings on the said land which is disignated No. 1 on the subjoined plat and which the Commissioners considered to be equal in value to 2/3 of said land assigned to the plantiff Louisa Duncan, wife of Noah G. Duncan for her interest in fee simple. I then divided the remainder of said tract into 3 lots designated on the subjoined plat No. 2, No. 3 & No. 4. No. 2 containing 32.278 acres of land & marsh was assigned to Jacob Cullen & wife in right of said wife. No. 3 containing 31.997 acres of land was assigned to Peter Corbin & wife in right of said wife. No. 4 containing 47.483 acres of land was assigned to John & Spencer Fletcher (orphans of Spencer). I then laid our the dower on the Three several lots marked with the dotted line the subjoined plat which was assigned to the said Louisa Duncan for her dower in. Signed Geo. M. Bundick, surveyor, Acco Co.6 |

Anecdote* | 1879 | During the summer of 1879 Dr. L.P. Bowen and his friend Dr. J.T.B. McMaster of Pocomoke City, a grandson of Madam Holden's pastor, went to the house near Jenkins Bridge of Mrs. Charlotte Corbin, a lady then 70 years old. They found that her maiden name was Milligan. (NOTE: Page noted that she was a niece of John Milligan of the will of Madam Holden, but she was actually his daughter, and named as such in his will.) She had grown up from childhood on the old part of the farm, associating with those who had known Madam Holden well. She and her companions used to dig about the old family mansion for the silver and gold said to have been buried as a protection from the British. Another tradition asserts that the bequest was made to Milligan because of his prompt bravery in assembling the neighbors and driving off an English gunboat steering for the widow's. Mrs. Corbin said that the old family graveyard was surrounded by a brick wall, around the top of which she used to run and play when a barefoot girl; that the tombstones were already becoming badly broken and the fragments carried off for wetstones; that there was no difference of opinion in the community of this being the place where Madam Holden and her forefathers were buried, and this too, during the lifetime of hundreds of those who knew the deceased personally; that the present graveyard had grown around the eastern corner of the wall, outside of it; that the old family burying ground, therefore, lies west of the present graveyard, and just where the cattle-pen and stables now are; and that she remembered when this act of desecration was deliberately perpetrated. Bowen and McMaster then began digging in the area and found the foundation just below the ground, followed its angles and found it inclosing the cattle-pen. Entering the pen and digging below the accumulations, we came upon indications of graves covered with old English bricks laid edgewise. Mrs. Corbin then told them of a Negro woman, Aunt Peggy Milliagn, considerably older than herself, of remarkable intelligence and entirely trustworthy, who was later interviewed by McMaster. Besides confirming in every particular the statements of Mrs. Corbin, whose birth she distinctly remembers, thus placing her own birth very near the time of Anne Makemie's death, Aunt Peggy testified that the low brick wall surrounding the graves was surmounted originally with a wooden fence, as is sometimes still seen in that section; that it was the only graveyard with a brick inclosure in all that neighborhood; that everybody knew it was the burial ground of Madam Holden's family.9 |
