In his will Ralph Corbin Jr. lent wife Sarah Corbin all my personal estate & also the land to the Westward end of my plantation To son Ralph Corbin after my deceased & the deceased of his mother, a parcel of land lying to the West end, also the 1/2 of the woods on the East end. Bal. of estate to be divided as follows: William to have 2/3 & the other 1/3 to my son Ralph. William Welburn & son George Corbin Exrs. Witt: Thomas Joynes, James Broadwater, Spencer Waters.4 |
Biography* | 1800 | Savage Corbin (of Ralph) was listed in the 1800 Census as age 26-45 (b.c. 1755-1775) with a wife of the same age, 3 sons under 10, 1 duaghter under 10, 2 free negros and 1 slave. In 1810 he was again listed as age 26-45 (b.c. 1765-1785) with a wife of the same age, 3 sons under 10, 1 son 10-16, 1 daughter under 10, 1 daughter 10-16, and 1 other (probably a free negro). In 1820 he was over 45 (b. before 1775) with a wife of the same age, 1 son 10-16, 1 son 16-18, 1 son 16-26, 1 daughter 10-16, 1 daughter 16-18, and no free negros or slaves. He was not listed in the 1830 Acc Census. Based on the above he would have had to have been born between 1765 and 1775, thus a b.c. 1770 was selected. The 4 sons and 2 daughters shown below are based on the above census data. In 1810 Savage Corbin and his wife Polly sold 22 acres of A148 (just west of Hallwood) to his brother Ralph Corbin and two years later 20 acres more (Whitelaw, p. 1267). Whitelaw's assumption that this Ralph was Savage's brother is apparently incorrect. Savage did have a brother Ralph named in thier father's will, but as Whitelaw goes on to state that Ralph left it to his wife Betsey and their unnamed children in 1815 disproves that they were brothers, for the Ralph that died in 1815 with a wife Betsey (she was Elizabeth Dennis) was Rev. Ralph Broadwater Corbin the son of George Bonewell Corbin and Sarah Broadwater. |

Edward Ker
M, b. circa 1725, d. before 18 October 1790
Birth* | circa 1725 | Edward was born circa 1725 at Cessford, Scotland.1 |
Marriage* | circa 1753 | He married Margaret (128) Shepherd, daughter of John Shepherd and Catherine (48) Harmanson, circa 1753 at Accomack Co, VA.2,1 |
Land bought* | 1755 | Edward bought land in 1755 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Edward Ker and wife Margaret bought her sister's interest in 350 acres of Whitelaw's tract A26, near Pungoteague, from John Harmanson and his wife Elizabeth. In 1790 Edward Ker left his home plantation to his wife Margaret and then to their son George. George later died intestate and in 1824 John Ker of Northampton deeded his interest in the land to his sister Margaret S. Ker, saying they had inherited jointly upon the death of their father, the Reverend George Ker. Later in that year Margaret married the Reverend Samuel C. Stratton. In 1852, after the death of his wife, Stratton had moved to Cloucester Co, NJ, and in this year he and his children James and Mary sold as 300 acres to Richard J. Ayres. He later died intestate and in 1880 a son of the same name bought the property at a sale to settle the estate. The north part of the 350 acres became detached and thereafter was known as Edgewater. The Stratton deed called the property Shepherd's Plain, which was later changed to Melrose, but the older name is still in use. The original Shepherd house was about 200 yards northeat of the present dwelling and within the memory of those still living (Whitelaw published in 1951) the remains of an eight-foot cellar could be seen. The existing house appears to date from soon after 1755, when Edward Ker and his wife Margaret became possessed of the full title. (Note: See Whitelaw p. 665-667 for pictures and a full description.) The old graveyard of the first Kers (since plowed up) was on a little hill across the cove from the house..2 |
Est settm't* | 1 September 1762 | Edward estate was settled on 1 September 1762 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Edward Ker quaified to settle the estate of William Justice Jr. William left his whole estate to his wife, but if she should be with child the child to have all my lands & an equal part of my negroes & other estate. Biography* | James S. Corbin first appeared as a head of household in the 1840 Census, age 30-40 (b.c. 1805) with a wife of the same age and a white male age 10-15 (b.c. 1825-1830) which could have been the son of his wife Mary by her first marriage. He age was given as 48 in the 1850 Census. 30 Aug 1831: "It is ordered to be certified that it appears to the Court by satisfactory evidence that James S. Corbin, Mary Jane Corbin and Sarah Ann Corbin are the only heirs at law of George Stewart who was Muster Master, paymaster and purchasing commissary to the Accomack and Diligence Galleys in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War" (Acc Orders 1829-1832, p. 362). 27 Aug 1849: "George Stewart, decd., who was a Muster-master, a pay master, and a Commissary General in the Virginia State Navy in the War of the Revolution" Administration on his estate to James S. Corbin (Acc Orders 1848-1851, p. 170). 23 Feb 1852: "It is ordered to be certified that it appears to the Court by satisfactory evidence that James S. Corbin, Mary Jane Taylor, formerly Mary Jane Corbin and Sarah Ann Metz, formerly Sarah Ann Corbin, are the only heirs at law of George Stewart who was a muster master, pay master and purchasing comissary to the Accomac Dilligence Galleys in the Virginia State Navy in the Revolutionary War. And it is further certified that it appears that the said George Steward died intestate" (Acc Orders, 1851-1854, p. 163). There are several possible explainations for these entries. James Stewart Corbin's mother, Mary Stewart, could have had a brother, George Stewart, an uncle George Stewart, or perhaps her father was George Stewart instead of James as show above.

Biography* | Henry Dryden was appointed guardian of Eleanor's 3 daughter by her first husband Joshua T. Donahoe in Dec 1837 in Worcester Co, MD. On 3 Aug 1839 Henry and Eleanor Dryden conveyed to Mary Corbin (HER MOTHER OR STEP-MOTHER?) all her right of dower in the land of John Corbin (Eleanor's father) sold by Joshua Donahoe. Henry purchased the tract Ireland from Robert H. Corbin and partially paid for it. In May 1851 Henry and Eleanor sold Eleanor's dower right in the estate of Joshua Donahoe to Wheatley D. Barnes. Between 1860 and 1870 Henry and Eleanor moved to Newtown (Pocomoke City) where he worked as a tinsmith. He kept the Union Hotel for a time during the Civil War, being accused of smuggling supplies to the Confederates by way of Baltimore to the Washington House in Princess Anne and from Pocomoke City to Virginia. There is no doubt of his Confederate sympathies (Dryden Family Book I, pp. 134-135).
