Biography*18 February 1932On 18 February 1932 Willie Alfus wrote "As far back as I know Richard Evans better known as King Richard was one of the first settlers of the Island. He was my great great grandfather. Then was Solomon Evans my great grandfather. Then come William Evans better known as Billy Evans, my grandfather, next my father Benjamin Evans. He was drowned March 6th 1866. My mother was left with 3 children, my sister Sallie, 14 years old, myself 8, and my younger sister 6. I was born on the Little Creek VA December 31st 1857. Moved to Cages in 1863. After my father's death my mother moved to North End April 1866. Had a house built where the School House now is. My younger sister died about two years after. My mother married again in 1869 or 1870 to John Tyler of St. Peter's Creek and we went there to live. In 1871 she was taken with TB and died February 22nd 1872. She had one child by her last marriage but it died about 6 months after my mother. My sister and I came down to the Island again. I went to Uncle Tommy Evans to live for a while. My sister got married that next summer to John A. Bradshaw of Nathun. They went to housekeeping in my mother's house and I went to live with them but she did the next year and I went to Uncle Tommy E.'s to live again. Stayed there about 3 more years and then went up to live to St. Peter's to Capt. John Wes Tyler's Stayed there a few years and came and married Elpetina Tyler. Stayed there little over a year then moved again to Smith's Island and built a house. Went to housekeeping 1882. I was taken sick November 22nd 1924. As far back as I now my mother's side, her father was Mitchel Evans, brother of Denard Evans of Deal's Island. Her mother was Peggy Evans, sister to Josiah Tyler of Jericho. She, mother had seven brothers and two sisters. Brothers were Leonard, Dow, Abrim, John, Saul, Tommy and Walice. Sisters were Sally Ann and Triffy. My mother's name was Keturah or Kity. She was called She married the second time, four years after my father's death to Big John Tyler and went to live up to St. Peter's Oriole. -- A Few Things I am Proud of -- I dredged the same boat for 44 years. Never went to work without first getting my license. Never was arrested or found for small oysters or anything else. Never was before a commissioner for not paying crew or ill treating in any way. Never had a man drowned off my boat. Always tried to obey the laws. Had the same cook for 25 years. For the last 25 years or more did not sail on Sunday to forward business. Never wronged anyone no way in the Oyster Business that I know of." Signed: "Willie A. Evans, Tylerton."1
