Friends say Maxine was not only a lovely, gracious lady, but one of the brightest persons they had ever known. Her captivating smile, engaging sense of humor, and her strength of character were hallmarks of the Maxine persona. Despite having to work her way all through school during the Depression years of the 1930s, Maxine excelled at every level of her formal education. Born Helen Maxine Gladding Oct. 20. 1916, at Hoopeston, Ill., Maxine, the name she preferred, grew up in Urbana, Ill. She earned a BS degree in journalism at the University of Illinois, graduating in 1938 with Bronze Tablet Honors, an award reserved for only 3 percent of a class having the highest average grades. The same year, she became the first woman ever hired in display advertising at the Moline, Ill. Daily Dispatch. She also wrote feature stories and book reviews for the paper on such diverse topics as the history of playing cards and Chinese art to the biographies of early pioneers and bold adventurers. Her other interests included music, science, literature and travel. Maxine met Jim in 1965 when she became his executive assistant at Learjet in Wichita. They were married Sept. 11, 1970, in the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Alexandria, Va. while he was with FAA. Jim's position enabled Maxine to accompany him on business trips to Mexico, Europe and all over the U.S., usually in a company Learjet or in an FAA aircraft, making their flying together all the more memorable and enjoyable. "Listed in Who's Who of American Women," Maxine was an honorary life member of the American Association of University Women. Over the years, she committed countless volunteer hours to various worthy causes, among them the Wichita Art Museum, American Red Cross and Camp Tapawingo, a charitable haven for disadvantaged children. She was active in the Wichita and Green Valley branches of the AAUW, Green Valley Illini Club, Women's Club, Arizona Historical Society, Tubac Historical Society, and Aero Club of Arizona. Always involved in Jim's work, she co-authored his book, "Stunt Flying In the Movies" published in 1982. In honor of Maxine's academic and professional achievements, her husband created a new classroom and permanent endowment in her name at the University of Illinois College of Communications. Told of the recognition a few years ago, Maxine asked, "Why me?" Jim said, "Because of the fine example you set for the rest of us, but more because I love you so much." Besides her husband, she leaves a brother, Don Gladding (Nell); three daughters, Yvonne Duarte (Lou), Marquita Brown (Loren), Vivienne Sargeant (Steve); three stepdaughters, Jeanne Plant (Lee), Roxanne Cable, Karen Kraus; 12 grand- and step-grandchildren, and 11 great- and step-great-grandchildren. Remembrances may be made to the Valley Presbyterian Church, where she will be interred, or to the Alzheimer's Association. Maxine was well-liked and respected by all who knew her, and will be greatly missed. A family memorial service will be private. Green Valley News & Sun, AZ, Wednesday, September 3, 2003.1,3 |
