Birth*1814Philip Custis Wallis was born in 1814 at Maryland.1
Death*25 October 1853He died on 25 October 1853 at Yazoo City, Yazoo Co, Mississippi. Philip Custis Wallis died of yellow fever on the 25th of October 1853, at the residence of the late Dr. William Mills*, near Yazoo City, Capt. P. C. WALLIS in the 40th year of his age. It is difficult for our community to realize the death of so excellent a man, and worthy citizen. For many years, he resided in Yazoo City. The absence of his noble and enterprising character leaves a blank in our midst. There was something peculiar to his mind, which qualified him in an eminent degree for commercial transactions, and the loss which public trade must sustain by his death will be difficult to supply. His capacity filled the place of many. He combined every virtue which is necessary to constitute the talented, and the generous man. In his judgment, he was clear and firm—and with his admirable discrimination his conclusions were to the point—Whatever sentiment he embraced, and we know of none but of the useful and virtuous, was turned to some practical good. No selfish principle marred his free and open heart. He was liberal and charitable. In the union of all estimable qualities he died a christian believer. A short time prior to his illness, his heart was fixed with devotion upon the trust as it is in Jesus. Himself and wife were weeping over the loss of their eldest daughter, a lovely and guileless girl, who had recently died of the same disease which terminated the life of her father, and from that hour he resolved through the mercy of a blessed Redeemer, though separated from his child on earth he would whenever it might please the Almighty to remove him hence, meet his child in Heaven. His faith sustained him in a dying moment, and in humble submission he committed his spirit to God. His mind was tranquil to the last. He died not like some christians die, in the transports of joy; but in all the meekness of unfeigned faith, with the name of Jesus upon his lips, until closed in solemn silence. Birth*circa 1700David Booth was born circa 1700 at Accomack Co, VA.1
Court - defendant*August 1734He was a defendant in a court case in August 1734 at Accomack Co, VA. In August 1734, David Booth was committed to jail on suspicion of killing Howell Glading; a date was set for his examination and witnesses were called to testify. After hearing the evidence, the court sent Booth to the next General Court for trial, though they did agree to release him on bail. A year later he was discharged from a bond for his good behavior, but his demeanor had not undergone a lasting reformation. In January 1736/37, he was summoned to answer for swearing ten profane oaths and for assaulting Eliza. Poolman.1
Court - named in ord*6 August 1734He was named in a court order on 6 August 1734 at Accomack Co, VA. By virtue of a receipt signed by coroner James Wishart (gentleman), David Booth was committed to the county jail on suspicion of killing Howell Glading. Booth was brought before the court, which sent him back to prison and set the following Tuesday for his examination. Ralph Corbin, Edward Baily, John Watson, Comfort Clark, Samuel Russell and John Brown were to be summoned to testify against the prisoner.2
Court - name in stat*13 August 1734He was named in a statement that was recorded in court records on 13 August 1734 at Accomack Co, VA. David Booth had been committed to the county jail on suspicion of killing Howell Glading. Now Booth and several witnesses were examined, and it appeared to the court that there was just cause for trying Booth at the General Court for the crime. It was the opinion of the court that they could accept bail for the prisoner, so David Booth himself, Ralph Corbin, William Sterling, Woney Rew, John Booth and George Booth posted security of £500 sterling to ensure that David Booth would appear on the fourth day of the General Court and attend till he was discharged.
Ralph Corbin, William Sterling, Edward Baily, John Watson, Geo: Corbin, John Brown and Joseph Mathews posted security of £20 each for their appearance on the fourth day of the General Court as witnesses for the King against David Booth, who stood accused of killing Howell Glading. [Signed] Henry Scarburgh.3
