Mother | Elizabeth Custis Teackle1 b. 21 Sep 1790, d. 30 Jul 1854 |
Birth* | 1814 | Philip Custis Wallis was born in 1814 at Maryland.1 |
Death* | 25 October 1853 | He died on 25 October 1853 at Yazoo City, Yazoo Co, Mississippi. Philip Custis Wallis died of yellow fever on the 25th of October 1853, at the residence of the late Dr. William Mills*, near Yazoo City, Capt. P. C. WALLIS in the 40th year of his age. It is difficult for our community to realize the death of so excellent a man, and worthy citizen. For many years, he resided in Yazoo City. The absence of his noble and enterprising character leaves a blank in our midst. There was something peculiar to his mind, which qualified him in an eminent degree for commercial transactions, and the loss which public trade must sustain by his death will be difficult to supply. His capacity filled the place of many. He combined every virtue which is necessary to constitute the talented, and the generous man. In his judgment, he was clear and firm—and with his admirable discrimination his conclusions were to the point—Whatever sentiment he embraced, and we know of none but of the useful and virtuous, was turned to some practical good. No selfish principle marred his free and open heart. He was liberal and charitable. In the union of all estimable qualities he died a christian believer. A short time prior to his illness, his heart was fixed with devotion upon the trust as it is in Jesus. Himself and wife were weeping over the loss of their eldest daughter, a lovely and guileless girl, who had recently died of the same disease which terminated the life of her father, and from that hour he resolved through the mercy of a blessed Redeemer, though separated from his child on earth he would whenever it might please the Almighty to remove him hence, meet his child in Heaven. His faith sustained him in a dying moment, and in humble submission he committed his spirit to God. His mind was tranquil to the last. He died not like some christians die, in the transports of joy; but in all the meekness of unfeigned faith, with the name of Jesus upon his lips, until closed in solemn silence. (Source: The Yazoo City Weekly Whig, Yazoo City, Miss. 11-11-1853) * Dr. Wm. Mills’ died October 8. His obituary was printed above that of P. C. Wallis, and states that he died of congestion of the brain.1 |
