Mr. Howland first worked as a lawyer with the Frankford firm of Hallowell & Melling. He later became a partner in Howland & Hess, where he continued working until his retirement in 1978. As part of his long legal career, he served as a deputy attorney general in the mid-1950's. In 1986 he became a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's 50 Year Club. He helped found the Northeast Philadelphia Realty Board and in 1953 received the William H. Warner Award, now known as the Realtor of the Year Award. Mr. Howland was born in Philadelphia and educated at Frankford High School and Temple University Law School. He is survived by his wife, Helen Kline Howland; three sons, Thomas Jr., William and John; two daughters, Jane Howland Grim and the Rev. Margaret E. Howland; 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Huntingdon Valley Presbyterian Church. Among his survivors is a half-sister, Mary Frances Sterling, whom he looked upon as his baby sister. Other survivors are his widow, Mrs. Mary (Maddox) Tyler; a son, Clayton M. Tyler; a daughter, Mrs. Roberta T. Wilkerson; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Capt. Purn spent most of his life in activities upon and around the water, and was for a number of years an Inspector here for the Department of Tidewater Fisheries. He was a life long member of Asbury Methodist Church, and for sixty years a member of Chesapeake Lodge No 144, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Burial was in St Paul's Cemetery, near Marion. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Halsell ‘Hoss' and Jerry Savage, of Joplin, Mo; two daughters and son-in-law, Linda M. Savage, of Newalla, Billye Sue and Lloyd Crownover, of Oklahoma City; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ruth and Jack Lindley, of Tulsa, Rebecca and John Adams, of Tulsa, Virginia and Wilbur Care, of Tulsa; one brother, Jack Savage, of Tulsa; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Turner and Virgie Hatridge Savage; his wife, Mary Sue Savage on April 11, 1993, and a brother, Guy H. Savage. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Terren Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, McAlester, under direction of Bishop Funeral Service.1 |

Born June 20, 1930 in Rockledge, GA, she was a daughter of the late Milo E. Chester and Minnie Lee Wynn Chester. A true southern belle, Frances dedicated her life to church and family and was never afraid of a hard day’s work. She took great pride in her vegetable and flower gardens, where you would often find her planting and pruning, even into her 70’s. She was a longtime, devoted member of Onley United Methodist Church. Frances will especially be remembered for her kindness and compassion as a caregiver to family and friends. Survivors include six children, Barbara Colonna and husband Richard of Exmore, VA, Eddie Baldwin and Florence Linton of Onancock, Joe Baumgardner and wife Marie of New York, Leroy Baumgardner and wife Laura of Onley, VA, John Baumgardner of Accomac, and Pam Taylor and husband John of Onley; three sisters, Shirley Hardy of Soperton, GA, Sandra Graham and husband Gabe of Rockledge, and Pearl Lundy of Vidalia, GA; a brother, Clifton "Tip" Chester and wife Gwen of High Point, NC; twelve grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Rosabell Strickland, Eugene Chester, Mary Carter Barker, Rudolph "Funny" Chester, Bobby Ray Chester, Sr., and Ilamay Chester. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at the Mount Holly Cemetery on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Wayne Hart officiating. John loved cutting grass, and often did so, whether it needed it or not. Over the last several months John was unable to go outdoors as he used to, so he began studying the bible. His faith became a source of strength and hope, as he knew he’d be reunited with his beloved wife and others who went before him. Survivors include his children, Billy Baumgardner and Rachael of Melfa and Shirley Kelly and husband Jason of Temperanceville, VA; sister, Pam Taylor and husband John of Onley, VA, brothers, Eddie Baldwin and Florence of Onancock, Joe Baumgardner and wife Marie of New York, and Leroy Baumgardner and wife Laura of Onley; brother-in-law, Richard Colonna of Exmore, VA; grandchildren, Alexis, Cheyenne, Anthony, Savannah, Haley and Jason; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Colonna. A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 3:00 p.m., with The Reverend Robert Fletcher officiating.
