Mrs. Rennie Miles Lewis, widow of Zadoc Lewis, of Saxis, died at the Northampton Hospital on 14 Jun 1962, aged 91 years. She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Susan Miles, born and reared at Saxis. She was buried in the Miles Cemetery. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 21 Jun 1962). She was evidently moved to the J.W. Taylor Cemetery at a later date. |

The steamer was beached on the Maryland side of Pocomoke Sound. Only two passengers were aboard at the time of the accident Mrs - J.T. Weaver and Mrs M.K. Miles both of Saxis Island en route to Onancock, Va. Distress signals were displayed and a gasoline boat from Saxis was sent to the aid of the disabled steamer. The passengers were conveyed to Saxis wharf. The steameir is only slighty damaged and will be able to proceed as soon as repairs can be made. |

Mary Contino Miles (age 89) passed away peacefully on January 29, 2018. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 43 years, Gerald Lee Miles and recently her sister Josephine Williams. She is survived by two daughters Virginia Bundick and Geri Greenjack (Steve). Mary Miles was a life long resident of Saxis VA. More recently she was a resident of Riverside Shore Rehab where she was happy. Mary worked for Perdue as the receptionist and later in payroll, retiring in 1994. What she loved most, was sharing the Bible’s message of a bright future with others. As part of the Bible Education of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she likely visited most of the homes in Accomack County over her years of service. She will be greatly missed by her family and dear friends. We wish to thank Riverside Shore Rehab for their care over the last 3 1/2 years. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3rd (3:00 pm) at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 18308 Lankford HWY, Parksley, VA. Kenneth Nock will officiate the services. Born in Saxis, VA on January 22, 1929, Mary was a daughter of the late Everett and Virginia (Bailey) Miles. A graduate of Longwood College in Virginia, she worked as a high school teacher in Denton, Maryland before making her home at Wilmington Manor school in New Castle, Delaware, where she taught second grade for over thirty years. Mary was a doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as a loving friend, colleague and role model. Fondly known as “Sugy” to her grandchildren, Mary loved attending family gatherings, and played an active role in every part of her grandchildren’s lives. She enjoyed frequent trips to the Dollar Tree, Friday afternoons at the Farmer’s Market with “the girls”, bragging about her grandchildren to everyone she met, and telling anecdotes about her hometown, Saxis. Most of all, Mary’s kind nature and zest for life was an inspiration to all who knew her. Mary’s father summed it up best in a letter he wrote to her many years ago when he said, “I am without words to explain how much I love you. You are something like your darling mother. Someone said God patterned her after his best woman.” In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, John F. Evans; son, John F. Evans II; and her recent husband, James Draper. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Singleton (Paul) of New Castle, DE; her granddaughters, Frances Leary (Travis) of Newark, DE, and Michelle Schoen (Jeff) of New Castle, DE; and her great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Alex, Maddie and Wyatt. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 12:30 pm. A private interment will be held on a later date in Mary’s hometown of Saxis, VA at Miles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to Saxis Museum to M.K. Miles at P.O. She was the daughter of Henry Clay Parker and his wife Mary Elizabeth Taylor of Colonial Beach, VA. She met and married William Bradford Hall Sr. of Sanford, VA when he came to Colonial Beach oystering when she was aged 16 and moved to Sanford where she has resided for the past 68 years. She was a member of the Sanford United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday and Vacation Bible School and a member of the quilting guild. She was well know for her home cooking and will be remembered for serving big Sunday dinners to upwards of 20 family members and friends each Sunday. She was predeceased by her husband Brad of 46 years, who died 21 years ago, a baby son, Richard Lee Hall, two sisters, Thelma Parker McCready of Sanford, Dorothy Parker Rollins of Colonial Beach, and two brothers, Owen and Harold Parker both of Colonial Beach. She is survived by a brother Henry Clay Parker of Colonial Beach, three children: a daughter Mary Elizabeth Hall Walker of Sanford, a son William Bradford Hall Jr. and his wife Elaine Gray Hall of Sanford, Linda Ellen Hall Miles and her husband M.K. Miles III of Woodbridge, VA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren: Michael Walker and his wife Tammy Daisy Walker and their daughter Amber Walker Giddings and her husband Jimmy Giddings of Sanford; Jeffrey Walker and his wife Teresa Morris Walker and their children Ashleigh and Lucas Walker of Manassas, VA; Vicky Hall Bloxom and her children Cody and Shelby Branch of Smithfield, VA; William Bradford Hall III and his wife Annie Anderson Hall of Atlantic, VA; Elizabeth Hall Stevens and her husband Greg Stevens and their daughter Brittany Stevens of Pocomoke City, MD; Rebecca Miles Ragon and her husband Michael Ragon and their children Samantha and Nolan Ragon of Stafford, VA; Cornelius Bradford Miles and his daughter Alexis Miles of Stafford, VA and several nieces and nephews of the Colonial Beach and Sanford area. John is survived by his mother, Mary E. Draper; sister, Elizabeth Singleton (Paul) of New Castle; nieces, Michelle Schoen (Jeff) of New Castle and Frances Leary (Travis) of Newark; great nieces and nephew, Mackenzie Welch and Alexander and Madeline Schoen; neighbor and lifelong family friend, Mary Bassett. John was a loving, doting son to his mother, taking care of her every need. As a brother and uncle, John was willing to lend a helping hand, along with his advice, that was usually delivered with a dose of quick wit and clever sarcasm. As a beloved great uncle, he was always good for a game of Uno or Buzzword, a handmade blanket, or a hug. His many artistic talents, culinary skills, and keen eye for turning a fleamarket find into a treasure, along with his affinity for answering every Final Jeopardy question correctly, will go unmatched in his family. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE from 10:00 am until 11:00 am followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment will be held privately.
