Tax list (personal)* | 25 March 1799 | Levi (of Levi of Thos) Ames was on the personal property tax list on 25 March 1799 at St. George Parish, Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Leven Ames, Junor, with 1 white tithe, 1 black tithe and 2 horses for at total of 68 lbs tobacco.3 |
Census head* | 1800 | Levi was listed as a head of household in the census of 1800 at St. George Parish, Accomack Co, VA. The household was headed by Levi Ames (HD. MATSO.), age 26-45 (b.c. 1755-74). Listed with him were 1M0-10 (John?), 1F10-16 (Elizabeth?), 1F26-45 (wife?) and no slaves.4 |

Anecdote* | | The most likely scenario is that since Levi Ames (of Thos) was in Isle of Wight County in 1785 when he sold most of his Accomack County land that he bought in 1777 to Zorrobable Ames and then a James Ames of Isle of Wight County sold the remainder of Levi's Accomack County land to the same Zorrobable Ames in 1801, is that Levi (of Thos) had died intestate in Isle of Wight County and his oldest son James (of Levi of Thos) Ames, who inherited the remaining land in Accomack County, came to Accomack County and sold that land and returned to Isle of Wight and James' younger brother, Levi (of Levi of Thos) returned to Accomack County and remined there (without owning land), being on the 1799 Personal Property Tax List (along with Levin Ames, Constable), and shown in the 1800, 1810 & 1820 census as 'Levi' Ames, while 'Levin' Ames the constable, continued to be shown as 'Levin' Ames. The 1800 Accomack County census shows 'Levi' Ames with a white male the right age to be John Ames (son of Levi) and a white female to be the right age to be daughter Elizabeth, who was shown as Elizabeth Warrington, age 65, in the household of John Ames, age 54, in 1850 in Isle of Wight County, both shown as born in Accomack County. |
