Born on May 30, 1922, in Fall River, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Florence and Harold Conboy.
"Penny" was a 1939 graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Crisfield Elks Lodge 1044, past president of the Princess Anne Lioness Club, past president of the Senior Board of McCready Memorial Hospital, past president of the Cancer Society of Somerset County and a member of the Happy Timers of Salisbury. Her numerous hobbies included bowling, bridge, traveling and especially fishing.
Her survivors include five children, Stanley Matthews Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Salisbury, Ronald F. Matthews of Onancock, Sandra Marshall and her husband, Larry, of Crisfield, Bonnie Clayton and her husband, Paul, of Wilmington, N.C., and Robin Matthews and his wife, Pam, of Salisbury; seven grandchildren, Ronald F. Matthews Jr. and his wife, Tammy, Scott Matthews and his wife, Beth, Todd Matthews and his wife, Andie, Lori Mrohs and her husband, Mike, Jeffery Marshall and David and Michelle Clayton; nine great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Miller and husband, Matt, Justin Matthews, Victoria Kelly, Taylor and Coby Clayton, Abby and Caroline Matthews and Amanda and Connor Mrohs; a sister, Ellen Mockas and her husband, Paul; a brother, Ted Gross; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Stanley M. Matthews Sr; a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Baker; a daughter-in-law, Rochelle Matthews; and a great granddaughter, Caroline Mrohs.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery in Princess Anne.
A special thanks to all the staff members at the Wicomico Nursing Home for their exceptional care during the past two-and-a-half years. Deposition*28 June 1658Maj. Ambrose London gave a deposition on 28 June 1658 at Northampton Co, VA. Ambrose London, being examined by the jury, said that about the latter end of March or the beginning of April, Francis, a servant belonging to John Mutton, came to the house of said London and the said London persuaded him to go home to his master and he replied he would not go home for he looked upon himself to be a dead man for his master had footed him and broke his blood and so long time as he lay in the thicket he spit blood and also shed blood upon his hat which he spit and also desired the said London and his wife to take notice if he died he would lay his death to his masters charge and he should never recover it and when I could not persuade him to go home, I went to this master and told him his servant was at my house and likewise told him what his servant had said and when his master came to him he justified it before his masters face and also said to his master it was in his hast and the said John Mutton did acknowledge he did foot him, but he did conceive it did him no hurt. Whereas at a court held in Northampton County 29 Feb 1663, it was ordered that Ambrose London should be fined 2,000 lbs tobacco for not baptizing his children according to Act of Assembly, and also the same Court also passed another order against him to be fined 1,000 lbs tobacco for Sabbath breaking & his irreverent behavior, and at a court held in the said county 28 Oct 1664 it was ordered that the sheriff should forebear to collect the said fines imposed on him until further order from the court, hoping to find a conformity in him; and the said Ambrose London being brought to this court by a "scire Facias" and the court finding him still in his obstinance have revived the said order; and it is ordered that the present sheriff collects forthwith the said fines of 3,000 lbs tobacco, with charges of court.11

Mary, the wife of Ambrose London, doth declare as above written.2
