Born on May 30, 1922, in Fall River, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Florence and Harold Conboy. "Penny" was a 1939 graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Crisfield Elks Lodge 1044, past president of the Princess Anne Lioness Club, past president of the Senior Board of McCready Memorial Hospital, past president of the Cancer Society of Somerset County and a member of the Happy Timers of Salisbury. Her numerous hobbies included bowling, bridge, traveling and especially fishing. Her survivors include five children, Stanley Matthews Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Salisbury, Ronald F. Matthews of Onancock, Sandra Marshall and her husband, Larry, of Crisfield, Bonnie Clayton and her husband, Paul, of Wilmington, N.C., and Robin Matthews and his wife, Pam, of Salisbury; seven grandchildren, Ronald F. Matthews Jr. and his wife, Tammy, Scott Matthews and his wife, Beth, Todd Matthews and his wife, Andie, Lori Mrohs and her husband, Mike, Jeffery Marshall and David and Michelle Clayton; nine great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Miller and husband, Matt, Justin Matthews, Victoria Kelly, Taylor and Coby Clayton, Abby and Caroline Matthews and Amanda and Connor Mrohs; a sister, Ellen Mockas and her husband, Paul; a brother, Ted Gross; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Stanley M. Matthews Sr; a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Baker; a daughter-in-law, Rochelle Matthews; and a great granddaughter, Caroline Mrohs. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery in Princess Anne. A special thanks to all the staff members at the Wicomico Nursing Home for their exceptional care during the past two-and-a-half years.
