Birth*17 October 1884Lawrence Bates Davis was born on 17 October 1884 at New Church Road, Horntown, Accomack Co, VA.3,4
Biography*1900The 1900 census shows him, a lad of 15 years, living with his parents in the village of New Church. Next door, on the west, lived his grandparents, Thomas Poulson and wife, Mary E. Poulson. The next year, at 16 years of age, Lawrence Davis went to work for the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad (later changed to the Pennsylvania Railroad) as a telegraph operator at the New Church station.4
Marriage*20 April 1903He married Annie Frances Bunting, daughter of George Robert Bunting and Ellen Hester Justice, on 20 April 1903 at MD-VA Line, Worcester Co, MD. They were shown as Lawrence B. Davis, age 22 and Annie F. Bunting, age 21.5,4
BiographyThe young couple lived above the railroad station at New Church, where Lawrence Davis had become station agent. Their first child and oldest son was born in this building, which was later moved to the Floyd Nock property and became the home, from 1918 to the present, of Algie C. Tull and family.4
Land bought*25 March 1907Lawrence Bates Davis bought land on 25 March 1907 at New Church, Accomack Co, VA. Lawrence B. Davis bought, from Ezekiel H. Ross and wife Alice N., an 1/2 acre lot on the west side of the railroad track for $100 (Acc Deed Bk 87, p. 457). He built a home here and it is likely his other two children were born in this house. He moved his family to the present "Will East" farm when the children became older and on 21 December 1917, sold their home to William J. Godwin for $1450 (Acc Deed Bk 112, p. 239).4
Land bought15 September 1917He bought land on 15 September 1917. On 15 September 1917, he bought the 95 acre Davis farm on the east edge of New Church, "on the south of the road from Horntown to New Church." This $8000 purchase was from Mary Harrington, widow, of Cambridge, Maryland (Acc Deed Bi 111, p. 435). She had inherited the land from her sister, Sarah Jones, when Sarah died in May of 1917. Sarah Jones was one of the heirs of William H. Marshall, who kept a grocery store in New Church at what became the Nelson-Johnson location (H.E. Kelley Supply Co. of later years). He died in 1893, without children, and left the "Federman Farm" to his wife's niece, Sarah Jones (Acc Wills 1882-1901, p. 284). This farm also included the Lewis S. Shreaves farm, across the road on the north, where William H. Marshall and his wife, Henrietta M., are buried. In fact, Mary Harrington sold 90 acres to Lewis S. Shreaves at the same time that Lawrence B. Davis bought his farm.4
Biography1918Lawrence Davis built a strong, sturdy, two-story home on his farm during 1918, at a cost of $10,000. The house has a basement and a finished attic. Joe Meelheim of Horntawn was head carpenter and "Seal" Brinier, one of his helpers. When the house was complete, Lawrence Davis moved his family here and farmed the land, with the help of day laborers and his sons, while continuing to work for the railroad. His great-grandson, Willie A. Davis, III, now (1984) lives in the home with his family.4
Census head*1930Lawrence was listed as a head of household in the census of 1930 at New Church to Horntown Road, Atlantic District, Accomack Co, VA. HH#302 was headed by Lawrence Davis, a 46 year old farmer. Listed with him were the following Davises: Annie, a 45 year old wife; William A., a 23 year old son; Gertrude, an 18 year old daughter; and Evelyn, an 18 year old daughter-in-law.6
Land bought6 October 1947He bought land on 6 October 1947. L.B. Davis bought two adjoining tracts of land from John F. Nelson, Jr., and his wife, Bettie, at a cost of $11,700 (Acc Deed Bk 190, p. 99). This land was near Chincoteague Baptist Church, on the south side of the road leading to Sign Post. The first tract was called the "Samuel J. Matthews Farm" and contained 38.66 acres cleared land and 42.83 acres woodsland. The second plot contained 38.70 acres. The next year, on 8 August 1948, he purchased 63 acres of land on the east side of the road from Horntown to Wattsville, from Eleanor Whiting Fitzgerald of Baltimore, Maryland, for "$100 and other valuable consideration" (Acc Deed Bk 197, p. 460). This land is still called the "Baltrip Place" and was bordered on the north and east by land formerly belonging to Charles Hurley (Popular Grove), and on the south by land of L. Medora Parker. Family members relate that this farm cost $6000 and timber was sold from the property to pay for it.4
Death*30 June 1951He died on 30 June 1951 at New Church, Accomack Co, VA, at age 66. Lawrence B. Davis retired from the railroad position in 1948. His obituary appeared in the 5 July 1951 issue of the Peninsula Enterprise (p. 2). It told of his sudden death on Sunday, June the 30th, at 66 years of age. The funeral was held on July 2nd, with burial in Nelson's Cemetery. Pallbearers were; Wrendo Godwin, William Gladding, John Brittingham, Basil Hickman, Howard Tull, and Milton White. His will was recorded on 5 July 1951 (Wills #26, la. 113). He left his property to his two sons, with a $500 gift to the son of his deceased daughter. His wife had died in 1946.
His death certificate shows him as Lawrence B. Davis, a 66 year old widowed & retired telegraph operator, P.R.R., who was born 17 Oct 1884 and died 30 June 1951 in New Church, VA, the son of John W. Davis and Gertrude Poulson and the spouse of Annie Bunting Davis.3

Land bought*1 September 1879John Wesley Davis bought land on 1 September 1879 at Accomack Co, VA. John W. Davis bought 7 1/2 acres of land near Horntown from John Henderson. He paid $250 for the property, bordered on the north by the county road from Horntown to New Chuch, on the east by the land of Logan Henderson and on the south and west by John S. Johnson. Family members relate that about this time and earlier, John W. Davis was a driver for the stage coach, making daily runs between Snow Hill, MD and Accomac, VA.6
Anecdote*circa 1880 John W. Davis built the large house that stood on his first puchase after he bought the land. He and his wife ran a boarding house, with livery stable, at this location until after their deaths in 1924. The house was torn down in the early 1950s to make room for the present Robert Mill's home.
At the time that John W. Davis bought the 3/4 acre plot, in late 1884, described by the deed as "near" New Church, this village was a small one grouped at the intersection of the Horntown road with Wallops road (present U.S. 13). The railroad down the Eastern Shore was completed in the fall of 1884 and a new center of activity became centered around the station at New Church, as businesses and private homes were built there. At the same time, the road between the railroad and the older section of New Church began to become lined with homes and businesses. While the John W. Davis boarding house and livery stable were not the first of these to be built (Mariner, Nothing Ever Happened in Arcadia, p. 39), it appears certain they were standing by the late 1880s.
There was a hotel located nearer the station, but even so, the Davis boarding house received a fair share of trade. Family members recall being told of "drummers" or traveling salesmen from Baltimore renting rooms by the week and horses by the day, as they contacted local merchants and farmers to sell their wares or buy crops and timber. The boarding house also supplied breakfast and a main meal each day for its residents.
John W. Davis and his wife had a busy life. He, with tending the livery stable and raising crops to feed the livestock and food for the table. She, with running the household, preparing rooms and meals, and raising the family. Descendants speak of there being cows to be milked and butter made for the table. Excess milk was sold to neighbors. Vegatables and fruits were canned and preserved in summer for use during the winter months.1
Land bought17 December 1884He bought land on 17 December 1884 at near New Church, Accomack Co, VA. John W. Davis bought 3/4 acres of land from John Brittingham for $75. The land was surrounded on three sides by other Brittingham land on the south by the county road from New Church to Wagram.7
Land bought30 October 1897He bought land on 30 October 1897 at New Church, Accomack Co, VA. John W. Davis bought 4 additional joining acres from John Brittingham and Samuel B. Slocomb for $375. The deed places this land in the village of New Church, bordered on the east by William B. Covington, on the west by John Brittingham and a ditch, on the north by Brittingham, and on the south by John Ward's heirs, Frank Covington and John W. Davis.8
Anecdote1912 John W. Davis was a member of Chincoteague Baptist Church located near New Church. He purchased a graveyard lot at Nelson's Cemetery in 1912 (Acc Deeds #99, p.130), where he and his wife are buried.1
Will*8 October 1920John made a will on 8 October 1920 at Accomack Co, VA. John W. Davis left his property to this wife, Gertrude F. Davis, and then to be divided among his children.9
Death*13 October 1924He died on 13 October 1924 at Accomack Co, VA, at age 69. He died at his home, six months after the death of his wife. The Peninsula Enterprise did not carry his obituary. The 18 October 1924 edition (p. 5, New Church News) does note that his children were called home by their father's death.3
Burial*John was buried at Nelsons' Cemtery, MD-VA Line, Accomack Co, VA. The tombstone book shows him as John W. of Wm. P. (husband of Gertrude F.P.), 18 Oct 1854 - 13 Oct 1924.3
Will - Recorded*30 October 1924John's will was recorded on 30 October 1924 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was proved.9
