Heir - named as* | 27 September 1824 | William was named as an heir on 27 September 1824 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that John S. Ker's estate settlement was finally recorded. Cash was paid to Thompson Holmes, Extr. of Samuel Downing. Samuel Downing had married John S. Ker's widow Agnes and he died in 1819. The final settlement of John S. Ker's estate was therefore handled by Thompson Holmes, who was shown as the guardian of Ann Downing & William D. Seymour. It is therefore assumed that Ann Downing was Samuel Downing's daughter by John S. Ker's widow Agnes and that William D. Seymour was John S. Ker's grandson by Ker's daughter Elizabeth R.C. Ker, who had married William D. Seymour in Worcester Co, MD in 1821..1 |

Death* | 17 July 2012 | He died on 17 July 2012 at Williamsburg, James City Co, VA, at age 85. George Edward Lewis died Tuesday, July 17, at the age of 85, after a courageous struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was born and lived most of his adult life in Monmouth County, N.J., but spent much of his youth with his father's family in Accomack County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. He always considered himself a Southerner at heart and returned to retire to Williamsburg in 1998. He had a long and accomplished career in aviation, in both his early years as a flight and aviation acrobatics instructor and seaplane pilot, and later as an airline captain with Pan American World Airways during the golden years of aviation. Two of the career highlights of which he was most proud were his participation in the Christmas Eve airlift of Cuban prisoners after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion and being one of the pilots who accompanied President Lyndon Johnson on his presidential tour of southeast Asia. He served in the Navy during World War II as an aviation radioman in the Pacific theater and was a lifelong member of the Order of Freemasons, belonging to the Williamsburg Lodge and the Khedive Shriners. His other affiliations included the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society, American Legion, Williamsburg Civil War Roundtable, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Lafayette Gun Club. Among his many interests were history, collecting antiques, steam cars, sailing, beekeeping, shooting, and reading. He was a member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carol; his only child, Claudia Lewis Ross and her husband, Dr. Glenn Ross; and grandchildren, Emma, Samuel, and Harry, all of Williamsburg. Charming and intelligent, with a wry sense of humor and a wonderful storyteller, he was the best and most honorable of men and an exceptionally loving and affectionate husband, father, and grandfather. His loss will be forever felt by all those who loved him. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Nelsen Funeral Home. To Plant Memorial Trees in memory, please visit our Sympathy Store.
