This deponent asked him what shall I give you for her, I will give a hogshead of tobacco for Besse Bacon. Whereupon the said Little told him saying I will not take that, but if you will give me a hogshead of tobacco weighing 300 neate, I will take it which this deponent refused to do. Then the said Tompkin told the said Little, I will buy her between John Parke and myself and give you John Little a cow that I had of George Travellor for her. Whereon the said Little told the said Tompkins, then she is yours. And then the said Little told him saying I will have a blankett that she hath of mine. And the said Tomplin told him he should. Anecdote | between 1800 and 1801 | Stephen Fletcher of Hog Island was on the mainland during Thomas Smith's revival of 1800-1801, and he brought Smith home with him to the island, where yet another revival occurred. The Hog Island society was apparently seldom visited by the circuit preachers after Thomas Smith's pastorate, but strong local leaders arose, and one of them, Isma Fletcher, became an exhorter. The circuit held a camp meeting on the island in 1821. By 1835 the society had dwindled to three persons, two of whom were Isma Fletcher and his wife.4 |
