Batterton Fletcher II1
M, b. circa 1764
Birth* | circa 1764 | Batterton Fletcher II was born circa 1764 at Dorchester Co, MD.2 |
Anecdote* | | Placing Batterton Fletcher II as the son of John Fletcher (son of Batterton I) is based on the assumption, contray to what others show, that he was not a proven son of Batterton I, as two admin accounts on his estate in 1753 and 1756 lists his 5 children, but the list does not include a son Batterton. And son William's (son of Batterton I) children have been identifed and that list does no include a son Batterton, which leaves only this John (son of Batterton I) as a likely candiate to be Batterton II's father. |
Marriage* | 4 December 1787 | He married Major (of Chas) Stanton, daughter of Charles (of Thos) Stanton and Jemima Hackett, on 4 December 1787 at Dorchester Co, MD. They were shown as Baterton Fletcher and Major Stanton.3 |

James Fletcher1
M, b. circa 1610
Birth* | circa 1610 | James Fletcher was born circa 1610.1 |
Headright* | 1635 | He was named as a headright in 1635 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year that William Stone paid the passage for 36 persons, including himself and brother Andrew, to the Colony of Virginia, thereby entitling him to the 1,800 acres at the rate of 50 acres per person. This land was located "at the blunt point between Hungers Creek and Mattawomens." Also listed among Stone's headrights were James Fletcher, Robert Chessheire, William Davis and Henri Armitrading. William Stone had imigrated to Virginia from Northamptonshire, England, in 1628 and was appointed governor of Maryland in 1648. The records do no give the name of James Fletcher again. Other of William Stone's readrights continued to live on the Eastern Shore after working off their 3-year indenture periods, and raised families here, leaving present-day descendants. It can be assumed that James Fletcher died likewise, without owning land or leaving a will.1,2 |
Anecdote* | | Mary Frances Carey stated that while Eastern Shore of Virginia records do not show a family connection, it is logical to suppose the James Fletcher, head right for William Stone in 1635, was the father of William Fletcher (d. 1710), Robert Fletcher (d. 1694) and Stephen Fletcher (d. 1713). The records do not show an actual connection between these three men, however, there is no doubt but that they were contemporaries, and the records do show them living in the same general location. William Fletcher, as a young man, was located between "Naswattox and Occahanock Creeks," the neck of land north of William Stone's patent. Robert Fletcher's wife Frances, the widow Johnson, deeded land to her son Jephtha on Nassawadox Creek in 1684. One of the witnesses to the inventory of Stephen Fletcher was Francis Wainhouse, who owned land on Occahannock Creek.1 |

In his will William Kendall Sr., merchant, wife Sarah, gave to each of the two boys Cattlin (i.e. John Cattlin) and Rabishaw at the Tannehouse, 100 acres out of my land in Accomack County and what is due them as appears by my ledger when they are 21. Whitelaw notes that it was a total of 200 acres and that the inference was that they were boys with different family names, but a later reference spoke of the land as having been owned by William Rabishaw and his brother.1 |

Land deed named in* | 29 September 1693 | He was named in a deed on 29 September 1693 at tract A147, Temperanceville - Hallwood, Accomack Co, VA. Whitelaw shows the land that Col. William Kendall had left in 1686 to Catlin and William Rabishaw was north of the east end of some the Drummond land and east of the lower part of tract A160. As previously stated, it is unknown whether the two young men were brothers, but in any event Catlin disappeared and William Rabishaw emerged as the sole owner, when in 1693 he sold the 200 acres to William Shepherd. As heir-at-law to his father, Capt. William Kendall also gave a release deed to Shepherd. The Power of Attorney shows William Rabishaw of N'hamp County, planter, appoint my trusty & wellbeloved friend Mr. John Washbourne, Gent., of Accomack County, my lawful Attorney to acknowledge one conveyance of land to William Shepherd. Signed 29 Sep 1693 by William WR Rabishaw. Witt: Capt. John Luke and Robert Scott. The deed shows William Rabishaw, of N'hamp County, planter, for 5,200 pounds of tobacco do sell to William Shepherd of Accomack County, 200 acres on the southern side of beaver dam on a branch of Crooked Creek, bounded on the North by said Dam & branch, on the West by a line of marked trees & the land that was formerly Ratclifs and now belonging to Mr. Samuel Sanford, (followed by a detailed description of degrees and poles along several courses) with houses & building and fenced & unfenced and all woods & waters. The said 200 acres was fromerly given to John Cattelin and me by a legacy from Col. William Kendall dec'd. Signed 29 Sep 1693 by William WR Rabishaw. Witt: Capt. John Luke & Robert Scott. Proved 2 Oct 1693. Recorded 1 Nov 1693.4,5 |
