Mr. Vessels is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Franklin Elder Vessels; was the devoted father to four children, Leona (Pat) Wheatley, Frankie (Cheryl) Vessels, Peggy (Lee) Hardesty and Michelle Vessels; the grandfather of Whitney (Chuck) Williams, Patrick (Angela) Wheatley, Shaun (Melissa) Hardesty, and Apryl (Chris) Stansbury; the great grandfather of Brenna, Levi and Ella Wheatley, Helena and Molly Williams, Hunter Stansbury, Luke and Drew Hardesty. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 11, 2014, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, with Rev. Robert Abel officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hager Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-8 PM, and after 9:00 AM on Monday. A prayer service will be held at 6:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. The northernmost landing at the end of Martin's Landing Rd. was known as Steelman's Landing for John D. Steelman (1903-1992). The southernmost at the end of Magotha Road is known as Cushman's Landing. The landing is named for John Emory Cushman (1892-1967). He along with his wife Emma Dorothy Mister (1895-1991) and his mother Edith Butler Cushman (1863-1951) are buried in Capeville Cemetery. The middle landing is known as Bull Landing for Leroy 'Roy' Downes Bull (1911-1982) who lived with his wife Lulu Wyatt Bull (1910-1994) on the lane. Both are buried in Capeville Masonic Cemetery. The northernmost landing at the end of Martin's Landing Rd. was known as Steelman's Landing for John D. Steelman (1903-1992). He and his wife Jeanette Carter (1909-2003) lived in the house at the Landing and are buried in Cape Charles. Allen doesn't think they had any children.3 |
