Father | William Debnam1 b. c 1600 | |

Last Edited | 1 Sep 2019 |
Birth* | before 1636 | Catherine Debnam was born before 1636 at Ightham, Tonbridge & Malling Borough, Kent, England.1 |
Marriage* | circa 1670 | She married Gov. Cadwallader Jones, son of Richard Jones and Frances Baldwin, circa 1670.1 |
Married Name | circa 1670 | As of circa 1670,her married name was Jones.1 |
Death* | 1700 | Catherine Debnam died in 1700 at Gloucester Co, VA. Catherine Debnam was born in England, a daughter of William Debnam and Catherine Jennings, who brought their family to Virginia by 1636. After William’s death in 1657, his widow Catherine, married Rev. Charles Grymes. Grymes died in the winter of 1661/2 and left a 600 acre tract in “Skinker’s Neck”, present day Caroline County, called the “Grymes Tract”, to be divided between his Debnam step-daughters, Catherine wife of Robert Taliaferro and Mary wife of Lawrence Smith. The younger Catherine had six children with her first husband, Robert Taliaferro, who died around 1670. Cadwallader Jones' wife was named Catherine. They had one daughter, named after his mother, Frances, who was born about 1675-80. According to a deed recorded in Hardin County, Kentucky in 1804, from Col. Francis Slaughter to his son-in-law James Crutcher, for a tract of land in Caroline County, Virginia, the ownership of the land is traced as follows: "First from Cadwallader Jones, to his daughter, Frances Jones, who married Robert [sic] Slaughter............" There is a compelling argument to be made that Katherine Jones was the widow of Robert Taliaferro. That she had a second husband, Cadwallader Jones, with whom she had one child. On November 20, 1672, “Mrs. Katherine Taliaferro” was granted 600 acres of land for transportation of 8 negroes and 4 English servants. Since Katherine Taliaferro received this patent, it is obvious that she was a widow and therefore Robert Taliaferro had died before 1672. She imediately assigned the land to her son Robert Taliaferro. (Rappahannock County records D.B. 5, p. 99). The ownership of part of this land was disputed by a man named Henry Corbin. The dispute was settled on January 6, 1673, when Corbin’s widow gave up the land in return for satisfaction received from Cadwallader Jones. Obviously, Jones was Robert Taliaferro’s step-father at this time, or why would he have paid Corbin’s widow to settle the dispute? This was the first mention of Jones in the records of Old Rappahannock, but from then on, Jones was very active in the area, buying and selling land. Many of the transactions were witnessed by Taliaferro sons. Katherine died about 1686 in Gloucester County, Virginia and is buried in the Warner Hall Graveyard in Naxera, Gloucester, Virginia.1 |
