George Martin
M, b. circa 1794, d. before 1880
Birth* | circa 1794 | George was born circa 1794 at Accomack Co, VA. The 1810 and 1820 census seems to limit his earliest birth to 1794. However, the 1850 census puts his birth at 1782 and 1790, the 1860 census puts it at 1800 and the 1870 census puts it at 1791.. |
Anecdote* | between 1796 and 1816 | In spite of the fact that there were 3 different Edward Martins in the 1810 census (2 in St. George Parish and 1 in Accomack Parish), a James Martin in 1810 and 1820 in Accomack Parish and a George Martin in 1820 in Accomack Parish, neither of these names are shown in the Accomack County Processioners Returns for 1796 to 1816, implying neither of them owned land during that period.2 |
Census w/parents* | 1810 | George was listed with his parents in the census of 1810 at St. George Parish, Accomack Co, VA. He may have been the male age 10-16 in the household headed by Edward Martin, age 45+. Edward Martin also had 2F10-16 who could have been George's sisters Susy W. & Betty Martin who were shown in a land cause in 1813.1 |
Land cause* | 4 May 1813 | He was named in a land cause on 4 May 1813 at south of Pungoteague, St. George Parish, Accomack Co, VA. Daniel Watson, who was given 125 acres in the 22 Jan 1750 will of his brother-in-law Mathew Fletcher, departed this life in Oct. 1811, intestate, leaving William Crowson & Polly his wife, Susy W., George & Betty Martin his only children and heirs at law. (NOTE: Evidently Polly was his younger daughter and Susy W., George & Betty Martin were the children of an older dec'd daughter.)3 |
Land sold* | 4 July 1816 | He sold land on 4 July 1816 at south of Pungoteague, St. George Parish, Accomack Co, VA. George Martin of the county & parish of Accomack sold land that was in the possession of John Riley & others which was recovered by me and others of said Riley in St. George Parish near the head of Anduy Creek, being my part of the tract, to Jesse Duncan Sr. Witt: Edmund Duncan, James Duncan Junr, Zadoc "X" Baley & Upshur "X" Baley. Signed: George "X" Martin.4 |
Marriage* | 15 August 1816 | He married Esther Bayly on 15 August 1816 at Accomack Co, VA. Abbott Trader was the security on the M.L.B. of George Martin and Esther Bayly. (NOTE: Abbott Trader had married Molly Bayly, the daughter of Robert & Nancy Bayly.)5 |
Census head | 1820 | George was listed as a head of household in the census of 1820 at Messongo-Muddy Creek, Accomack Parish, Accomack Co, VA. This was his first appearance in the census. He was shown as George Martin a head of household age 16-26 (b.c. 1794-1804). Listed with him were 3F0-10, 1F16-26 and no slaves. George was on page 20 listed between John Johnson & Samuel Johnson and near Madox Fisher, Henry Marshall & Kesiah Bird. The only other Martin in Accomack Parish was James Martin, age 26-45, who was also on page 20. Daniel Boston, age 26-45, and Sampson Marshall, age 26-45, where also on page 20. Upshur, Zadock and Nancy Bayly were on page 21. It is assumed that his wife Esther Bayly was somehow related to these Baylyes. This was probably in the Messongo-Muddy Creek area.1 |

Biography* | | Elizabeth Russell, daughter of William Russell, was listed with her husband George Martin in the 1860 Acc Parish HH#259 as age 30 (bc 1830). In 1870 she was again with her husband George Martin, age 79 (bc 1791) and disabled. She was age 45 (bc 1825) with children William age 19, Sarah age 17, Edward age 16, Jessey age 11, Samuel age 8, Augustus age 5, and an infant age 11/12. Also in 1870 three of her sons (William, Edward and Jessy) were also listed with her father William Russell on Saxis in HH#386 with Gilly and Henny Marshall. In 1880 Elizabeth (Russell) Martin, age 40 (bc 1840) a widow was the head of HH#330 on Saxis, between Charles Lewis and Amanda Marshall with 3 of her sons Samuel age 15, "Agustar" age 12, and "Jas T." age 9. In 1900 there were two contempory Elizabeth Martins on Saxis. One was listed as the head of HH#393, between James Ellis and Columbus Linton, as "Elizabeth" Martin, age 65, born Jan 1835, widowed, and having had 3 children of which 3 were living. She was living alone. The second was listed as the head of HH#458, between William Flueharty and William Linton, as "Lessie" Martin, age 65, born Dec 1834, widowed, and having had 5 children of which 4 were living. Living with her was a daughter Mary Martin, age 25, born May 1875, single, and a dress maker. The first one, living alone, is believed to be Elizabeth Russell who married George Martin in 1849. She evidently married second Robert Marshall in 1884 and he died shortly thereafter in 1886. She probably reverted to her previous married name of Martin. The second one, with the daughter Mary, might have been Elizabeth Phillips who married William H. Martin in 1861. In 1910 she was listed as "Lizzie" Martin, age 75 (bc 1835), the widowed head of HH#70 between Webster White and Travis Linton. She was listed as having had 3 children of which 3 were living. With her was a daughter, Sarah Crockett, also widowed, age 40 (bc 1870). This would have been the Sarah Martin listed with her in 1870. Since she was the only elderly Elizabeth Martin on Saxis in the 1910 Census, which was taken in April, she is assumed to be the Mrs. Elizabeth Martin that died on Saxis on 14 Jul 1910, aged 85 (bc 1825) (Pen. Ent., 23 Jul 1910). |

Margaret Jane Wessells1
F, b. circa 1836, d. 27 June 1909
Birth* | circa 1836 | Margaret was born circa 1836 at Accomack Co, VA.2 |
Census w/another* | 1850 | Margaret was listed with another family in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Margaret Wessell, age 14 in HH#246 headed by Elijah Kelly, a 43 year old farmer..2 |
Biography* | | Margaret Jane Wessells who married John W. Linton in 1853 and Susan E. Wessells who married Jesse T. Miles in 1868 both have Betsy Wessells as thier mother on their marriage records and a father was not listed. It is, therefore, assumed that Margaret and Susan were sisters and that their father, Betsy Wessells' husband, died before they were married. The 1850 Census shows Elizabeth (Betsy) Wessells, age 36, without a husband and living with Henny Bayly, age 46, who is also without a husband and has a small child named Wm. Bayly, age 3. Elizabeth's children are shown as Wm. Wessells, age 9, and Susan, age 3. From this, it is also assumed that Betsy's husband died before 1850. Margaret is shown in the 1850 Census, age 14, living with Elijah Kelly. The 1860 Census shows a Betsy Wessells, age 57, living on Saxis with John Spence. This age does not match the one in the 1850 Census by about 10 years, but it could be the same person. Margaret, age 22, is shown as married to John Linton in the 1860 Census, but Susan could not be located in the 1860 Census. Susan is shown in the 1880 Census, age 32, as the wife of Jesse Tho. Miles on Saxis. Margaret Jane Wessells' granddaughter, Margaret Ann (Linton) Marshall, told M.K. Miles in July 1994 that her grandmother, Margaret, and Susan Wessells were sisters. |
