Sampson (of Dan) Turner1
M, b. circa 1759, d. before 1806
Birth* | circa 1759 | Sampson (of Dan) Turner was born circa 1759 at Worcester Co, MD.1 |
Marriage* | circa 1785 | He married Mary (of Zadock) Turner, daughter of Zadock (unplaced) Turner Sr. and Sabra Hicks, circa 1785 at Worcester Co, MD.1 |
Anecdote* | | According to descendants of Sampson Turner, two records say Sampson was in Georgia prior to the Revolutionary War (1777-1783). He was b. 1759, so if he was in Georgia, he was probably with his family. Records say he received bounty land as a citizen (of GA) revolutionary soldier. Another record says he received 500 acres of land for being a Whig, Refugee Soldier, meaning he had to leave his land and home when the British attacked and he joined the army of another state, in this case, MD. Most GA records prior to the war were burned when the British captured Savannah. Records show that Sampson served as a Matross in the Gayle's Artillery of Maryland during the Revolutionary War. Payroll records and muster rolls show he served as a forage guard at a camp in New Jersey in 1781-82. Researchers say that Sampson and Mary, along with his sister, Eunice, and her husband, Mary's brother, Joshua, along with cousins, Samuel and James, and probably others, came overland from Maryland to the Buffalo Creek area of central Georgia in 1787. Maryland marriage records show that Eunice and Joshua were married in Worcester Co., MD in 1789, but the Southern Recorder obituary of January 22, 1834 says that Samuel Turner, Revolutionary War veteran, came to Georgia from Maryland in 1787. It also says he was one of the first to cross the Ogeechee River. Other family members, such as Mary's dad, Zadoc, and brothers, came by ship from the Chesapeake area to Savannah and crossed over to central Georgia in 1791. The first found evidence of Sampson in GA is the 1794 tax list.2 |
Death* | before 1806 | Sampson (of Dan) Turner died before 1806 at Hancock Co, GA.1 |

Daniel (unplaced) Turner1
M, b. circa 1732, d. 1792
Birth* | circa 1732 | Daniel (unplaced) Turner was born circa 1732 at Worcester Co, MD. |
Anecdote* | | According to Steve Turner citing the results of yDNA of some of their descendants, Zadock, Daniel, Laban and Levin (who only show up in Worcester or in their later migrations) are unplaced apparent DNA relations of Samuel I who stayed in Worcester, though for whatever reason were not named in wills or estates. According to yDNA of their descendants, they do look like probable grandsons or great-grandsons of Samuel I, of John Turner & Sarah Kellam of Accomack, or of a brother of that John, but so far we have no clear evidence of the exact line of descent to them. Therefore, they are shown as "unplaced" noting their yDNA shows close ties to the Edward I and Samuel I families that came out of Accomack consistent with a common 17th century or slightly earlier origin. Their origins are almost certainly tied to the Samuel I and Edward I lines in some as yet unknown way.1 |

Tax list* | 1783 | He was on the tax list in 1783 at Buckingham Hundred, Worcester Co, MD. John Turner was a head of household and paying no land tax. There were 6 persons listed with him.2 |
Land sold* | 7 October 1788 | He sold land on 7 October 1788 at unnamed tract, Pocomoke Hundred, Worcester Co, MO. According to Ruth Dryden, John Turner, son of Samuel, sold to Samuel Taylor, son of Solomon, 100 acres in Pocomoke Hundred, no name of tract, which she assumed was Samuel's Adventure. According to Steve Turner, Samuel Turner II did not have a son John, but did have a son Jehu, and this may have been him. Steve provided the following transcription. "This Indenture made the Seventh Day of October Anno Domini Seventeen hundred and Eighty Eight Between John Turner Sun and heir of Samuel Turner of Worcester County in the State of of Maryland of the one part and Samuel Taylor (Son of Solomon Taylor) of the County and State aforesaid of the other Part Witnesseth that the Said John Turner for and in Consideration of the sum of five Shillings Current money of maryland to him in hand paid by the said Samuel Taylor before the Sealing and delivery of these presents, have bargained and Soled and by these presents doth give grant bargain and Sell unto the said Samuel Taylor his heirs and Assigns all the Lands that lieth in Pocomoke hundred and County aforesaid that formerly did belong to Samuel Turner being the same or Part of the Same lands whereon a certain Edmond Cropper now liveth with all the priviledges and Appertenances thereunto belonging or in any manner appertaining To have and to hold the aforesaid Land and premises as above Set forth and discribed, unto the said Samuel Taylor his heirs and assigns forever. In testamoney Whereof the said John Turner to these presents his hand hath sett and seal affixed the day and year first above written." Witnesses were two JPs., and John Turner proved it himself before them the same day, Oct 7. In the margin it says Delivered Saml Taylor Carpenter. (Source: Worcester Co, MD Liber L & M: p. 434 of Liber M). Steve reports there seems to be no evidence if or when Samuel II sold or disposed of Samuel's Adventure after the taxes were last known paid on it in 1762. It was not specifically mentioned in his will, unless it was part of the rest of his estate he left to his wife. Since the price was only 5 shillings, perhaps it was some remaining minor interest the seller had in the land that was being purchased to obtain a clear title. (NOTE: The two most likely explanations for it are that John (of Samuel I) was still alive and had some unknown land interest of his father Samuel I's to sell, or that the actual seller was Jehu, son of Samuel (of Samuel) II, selling Samuel's Adventure or some other unknown land interest that his father had owned.)3,1 |

If he was a son of John (of Samuel I) Turner he might have been born ca. 1739. Or he may be a visitor from Onslow Co NC, where there was a Benjamin Turner Sr as early as 1741 with a son Benjamin Jr who first appeared in his own right in 1762 when he sold property inherited through his wife Jane Jones from her father Samuel Jones. In 1764 and 1766 he sold property there inherited from his own father. He is on the 1769 and 1770 Onslow Co tax lists. He probably is the same Benjamin Turner who bought land in Tryon Co, NC Feb 1770 and appears to have ended up in Pendleton Dist, SC.1 |
