Land deed named in* | 11 August 1757 | He was named in a deed on 11 August 1757 at tract Bundelin's Quarter, Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co, DE. Bundelin's Quarter, 300 ac (which had been surveyed in 1735 at 300 ac), having been seized for debt of John Rudolphus Bundelin and sold by sheriff at auction to Thomas Nixon [since 28 Mar of same year?] on this date conveyed by sheriff to Thomas Nixon. Bundelin must have contested this; he left Bundelin's Quarter in his will written 13 Aug 1758 to Samuel Beavans Turner (and died by Oct 1758), and in adjoining survey for Jehu Turner in 1762 this land is labeled Alate claim'd by John Rodolphus Bundeline." Apparently Nixon prevailed: see 11 Aug 1768 where Thomas Nixon conveyed a chunk of this land via Samuel Turner to Samuel Johnson. Note that most of that same chunk of Bundelin's Quarter had been designated as part of John Turner's land when Thomas Davison's land was surveyed in 1750; Davison's survey itself showed considerable of Bundelin's Quarter. Other areas of Bundelin's Quarter were designated as "Abraham Smith's Land" and "Land late of John Dyer" on Davison's 1750 survey. Had Bundelin somehow sold these pieces of Bundelin's Quarter but never legally conveyed them to John Turner, Smith and Dyer, or were they just renters? How could Davison's survey so significantly overlap Bundelin's previously surveyed land? It looks as if the surveyor was unaware of the 1735 survey, but aware of the tenure, of whatever nature, of Turner and the others. After the sheriff's sale, the original boundaries of Bundelin's Quarter were observed, at least on the east end.3 |
Tax list | 1761 | He was on the tax list in 1761 at Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co, DE.3 |
Land deed named in | 1 January 1763 | He may have been named in a deed on 1 January 1763 at Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co, DE. William Tharp (Thorp) of Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex Co, yeoman, for 160 pounds sold to Samuel Turner Junr of Mispillion Hundred Kent Co, son of John Turner late of same place, yeoman…a tract of land and swamp bounded by land of Samuel Turner Junr surveyed by William Killen Esqr by virtue of a warrant bearing date 8 Apr 1758 near Cow Swamp, Thomas Davison, John Rudolphus Bundelin, house where the said John Turner late did dwell, Jeremiah Morris and the heirs of Andrew Jordon…235½ a. …" [etc.] Adj to Jeremiah Morris; wit; John Turner, Jehu Turner. (NOTE: The term "late" could imply that John Turner had either died or had left Mispillion Hundred.)3 |
Death* | He may have died. It is unclear whether he died soon after 1756, or moved to Worcester or elsewhere, that he may have even survived to 1788 or later if he was the John son of Samuel who sold unspecified Pocomoke Hundred land of his father's in 1788. It is also possible that the 1788 document maybe really related to Jehu selling land of his father Samuel II, who did have land in Pocomoke Hundred as late as 1762 of which the disposition is otherwise unknown. SeeJohn (unplaced) Turner, born between 1706 and 1745, for more records that may or may not relate to this John Turner whose death year is uncertain.3 |
