Deposition named in | 16 May 1682 | He was named in a deposition on 16 May 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. Deposition of Francis Crawson aged about 20 years: About four years ago, Crawson's master (Mr. Edw. Revell) sent Crawson, David Griffin and James an Indian (all Revell's servants) to plant at the Great Neck with James "entrusted for the management of the crop." Shortly afterward, James and David fought together. About a year and a half ago, when Crawson and David were pegging and hanging tobacco at the Great Neck in Matomkin, Revell came and asked Crawson several questions: Where was Joseph Brown? Crawson did not know, but said that David Griffin "was gone to pay work that they had borrowed" from Williams and would be gone two or three days. What was Crawson going to do after pegging and hanging the tobacco? Gather beans and peas. Why was the tobacco house not ridged? Joseph Brown was intending to ridge it. Revell told Crawson to help him; after the beans and peas were in, he was to cut off corn tops and put them upon the house. Before he could do it, Revell sent word by Henry Williams saying that David and Crawson should go help Richard Marriner with corn; although David replied that they could not go until they put the corn tops on the house, they left the next morning with Williams to gather Marriner's corn. When they came home, they found Joseph Brown and his wife, who asked where they had been and who gave them orders. David answered, "One that had a greater power here than he [Brown], and if he [Brown] came to him, the said David, he would thrust his head in the fire." Brown came toward David, and the next thing that Crawson knew, Brown was on the ground. Brown ran outdoors asking where the axe was, "for he swore he would knock the said David on the head." David went out after him, followed by Brown's wife, who "cried out her husband would be killed or murdered, so [Crawson] went between her and the door and kept her in and told her the said David would not be so mad as [to] kill a man." When Crawson looked out, he saw both men on the ground with David on top. A short time later, when Brown and David were coming into the house, "David took hold of Joseph Brown and pulled him out by the skirt of the coat." Signed and sworn in open court 16 May 1682, by Francis (O) Crawson.7 |
Deposition named in | 16 May 1682 | He was named in a deposition on 16 May 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. Deposition of George Davis aged about 22 years: Davis, who had served Mr. Edward Revell for more than four years, said that David Griffin was Revell's servant when he came and continued as such till about last Christmas. Davis had heard David speak of Revell appointing James (an Indian now deceased) to be his overseer; when James had tried to correct David, he fought with James. Isaac Metcalfe, who was standing by, "advised James to forbear; he was too hard for the boy (meaning David)." David Griffin "answered it should never be said that he did yield to an Indian dog." When David lived at Great Neck (another of his master's plantations, which was under the care of Joseph Brown), he said that he threw Brown on the ground and took away his stick. Brown ran out of the house, looking for an axe and swearing that he would kill him. David pursued him and threw him down again; Brown's wife came to help her husband, crying that he would be killed, but Francis Crossy stood in the door assuring her that David would not kill a man. Later Revell agreed that James the Indian should be overseer at the Great Neck plantation with Francis Crossee and David under him. Soon afterward, James "came up to Pungotege, having a very black eye." He said that he and David had been fighting. Signed and sworn 16 May 1682, by George (X) Davis.8 |
