Marriage* | October 1823 | He married Sally Evans in October 1823 at Worcester Co, MD. Their marriage record shows them as Lewis Jones and Sally Evans. The story of Agor Lewis & Sallie the Cake-maker by Robert "Bob" Jones: The Sally Jones Home -- the House of Cakes: When such a name sticks to a property for more than a century and a half, and in this case, the name "Jones" is the same as my own, curiosity begins to take over. After poking around among my "attic treasures" - that is, scraps of papers and yellowed files that my heirs will heave into a dumpster before my body is cold - I can now speak to you with some authority about the good Sally Jones of Newtown (Pocomoke City). It turns out that she was an aunt of mine, having married my g-g-grandfather's brother Agor Lewis Jones, 1792-1852. A word about Agor's father. A certain Major Jones, 1753-1825, (son of Elisha) married Polly Payne in about 1780. Elisha and wife Comfort lived on Sheephouse Road, maybe one mile from the Carlton Massey Car Dealership, on a property known as "Aberdeen," patented in 1689, which was later acquired through marriage by the Boston family, and in more recent times, by the Redden and Stevens families (William David Stevens, 1929-2013). I believe there are several chicken houses on part of "Aberdeen," the name even used on one of the farm signs. Elisha and Comfort Jones produced five children. The three who contribute to my story are Agor Lewis Jones, Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" Jones [Stevenson], and Moses Upshur Jones, 1787-1875. Moses, who was my great-great-grandfather, owned a farm called "Whitehall," where he raised his family of five sons, one of whom, George, walked through the woods to court Sarah Payne who grew up on Jones Road (in the house where Pauline Lambertson lives - see previous post). "Agor" is a rare name -- does it come from the Bible? George and Sarah ended up marrying, and George moved into the Payne home and ran the farm, later split up into the Paul Jones farm and the Arthur Jones farm, the latter now in the hands of Paul's grandson Wayne Lambertson. The Moses Jones house on "Whitehall" disappeared before my memory. The farm itself comes into view as you drive south on Redden Road, which dead ends at a stop sign on Holly Swamp Road. At the stop, turn your gaze to the right and you will see a large, deep field with no building of any kind. That is "Whitehall." The last family to live there was the Will Payne family. In 1809, Agor Lewis Jones, age 17, was bound to James Tilghman, Newtown shoemaker, to serve as an apprentice until he was 21 years old. His father Major Jones gave his consent. The woman he was to marry in 1823, Sally Evans, was bright, industrious, and gifted in baking cakes -- and obviously, a good business woman. When Bethany Church decided to move from their 1832 site, near the cemetery, they purchased a Third Street lot from Sally Jones in 1849 -- a lot with a store building, which was refitted as a sanctuary and used for four years. Then, a new building was put up and used by the Bethany congregation until 1882 when the Market Street Church was built. When Sally Evans [Jones] turned 48, my Uncle Agor, 31, keen on both cakes and cougars, pressed his suit and took Sally to the altar (1823). Soon afterwards, they bought the hotel property that had belonged to Captain John Merchant and became fine hotel keepers. The establishment was soon known as the "Sally Jones Hotel." They kept a good table at moderate charges, James Murray tells us in his 1885 History of Newtown, where parts of this story can be confirmed. Uncle Agor also ran a Newtown tavern. There were no children. Sally's cakes became famous in the whole area. Let's back up. Margaret Young, who was Sally's aunt Peggy, had been Newtown's Betty Crocker, her cakes appreciated far and wide. Niece Sally Jones and an African-American "Aunt Mareer" were her assistants . . . and later Rosa Young. After Aunt Peggy died, Sally Jones sort of took over the "cake empire," and Aunt Mareer and Rosa Young began to compete more and more as to who could make the better cake -- and everyone in the environs benefited from this happy competition. Sally and Agor kept horses and a carriage, and, whenever there was an event in Worcester, Somerset, or Accomack, off they would go, the carriage laden with mouth-watering blue ribbon cakes. Whether the event was a camp-meeting, an auction, an election, or a holiday festival, Agor and Sally were sure to be on hand, and, years later, many said, "Twas the cakes that made 'em rich!" In June 1850 when Agor was 58 and Sally about 75, and they still had 2-3 years ahead of them, we do not know why, but Sally bought a 10.5-acre lot for $200 and built, at present-day 909 Market Street, the house that bears her name -- but also referred to as the Crockett House. We may assume that Sally was anticipating "life after Agor," that is, her days as a widow even though Agor was much the younger. Perhaps she knew the terms of Agor's will and with a chest full of her own money, she took prudent measures for her golden years. And then some women have a mind of their own and are perhaps much the better off for it. Uncle Agor ran a Newtown tavern, which is mentioned in his will, which he wrote April 4, 1846; it was probated August 3, 1852 (he died July 13). His wife Sally was appointed executrix and she was to enjoy his estate for life. Poor Sally had but one short year to "enjoy" it. At Sally's death (February 1853), according to the terms of Uncle Agor's will, the estate would go to Rosa Young, who also received Agor's house and lot, the Old Tavern Lot, and $500.00. The witnesses were Cary C. Sears, George W. Landing, and Denard Williams. As the probate was conducted, it was discovered that Sally Jones had $6000 in hard cash - almost $200,000 today. Agor's will had no provisions for the Jones family. His wife was executrix and had full use of his estate. The biggest beneficiary was to be Rosa Young, who had served faithfully as a family retainer. They must have looked on her as a daughter even though she was but three years younger than Agor. When Sally died, her will named her nephew Moses Upshur Stevenson, 1811-1865, as the executor (he had been named after my g-g-grandfather, Moses Upshur Jones). Her nephew gets $500 ($18,000 today); a niece Elizabeth, wife of James Stevenson, Somerset County, gets $500; Lewis Watkins Young, Worcester County, son of James Young, $500. Sally expresses the desire to be buried in St. Mary's Church Yard "by the side of my late husband." The will goes on for three more pages. In addition to leaving money to various relatives, Sally made bequests to St. Mary's Episcopal Church and to the Methodist Church (Bethany). Heiress Rosa Young, almost 60, is now a well-to-do woman and accepts, in late 1853, an offer of marriage from Peter Corbin, age 33, a handsome farmer in the Goodwill area. Almost 30 years later, in the 1880 Census, we see, midway Goodwill and Stockton, enumerated in Household #360, Rose Corbin, 85, all by her lonesome -- Peter apparently laid to rest . . . and no more cakes to bake. James Murray mentions her in his 1885 history as living in "the neighborhood of Davis cross roads" [Goodwill], at the advanced age of ninety years." That is all I can tell you about the life and times of Sally Jones, and how she and Rosa Young used their wits, charm, and ambition to rise in Pocomoke's antebellum society. Rosa and husband Peter Corbin have no tombstones, but if you take a stroll in St. Mary's Church Yard, you will see Sally and Agor still there, side by side. And, while you're at it, take a stroll down Market Street and pause at 909 and admire the pretty house that Sally built and think of all the cakes it took to build it.3,2 |

In June 1850 when Agor was 58 and Sally about 75, and they still had 2-3 years ahead of them, we do not know why, but Sally bought a 10.5-acre lot for $200 and built, at present-day 909 Market Street, the house that bears her name -- but also referred to as the Crockett House.
