She graduated from Wynthrop College and the Medical College of Virginia and is a member of both alma maters’ alumni associations. Before living in Danville, she lived in Nassawadox on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Mary Ann Burton served on the Northampton County School Board. While never a practicing physician, she used her medical training to volunteer with public school medical screenings of elementary students. She was an active member of the Northampton Medical Auxiliary assisting with fundraisers like the antique show, Charity Ball, and Rose Day. She was Trustee of the Board of WHRO-TV. She was a member of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society, serving as a docent for Ker Place. Her love of music and arts made her a regular supporter of all local cultural events and she was a long-term subscriber of the Virginia Opera Association. Mrs. Burton was a Deacon with the Belle Haven Presbyterian Church. She is survived by three sons, Clarence Isaac Burton of Nelsonia Virginia, Robert Stewart Burton of Bedford Corners, New York and Richard Lee Burton of Springfield, Missouri; one daughter, Cara Jane Burton of Parksley, Virginia; one brother William Isaac Bigger of Raleigh, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Stewart Burton, and daughter, Elizabeth Ann Burton. Funeral services will be Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 2 pm at Belle Have Presbyterian Church in Belle Haven, Virginia with the Reverend Monica Gould officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Eastern Shore Historical Society, 69 Market Street, Onancock, VA 23417 or First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 937 Main Street, Danville, VA 24541.1 |

He enjoyed spending time on his property in Accomac and enjoying nature. Brooks was happiest when he was learning something new whether mechanical, political or historical. He had a deep knowledge and appreciation for world politics and he loved listening to music of all genres. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Brooks Douglas Shaw and wife Cathy of Annapolis, MD; a sister, Carole Shaw Roop of Melfa, VA; a brother, Wayne Etmon Shaw and wife, Jeanne of Annapolis; three grandchildren, Claire Henderson Shaw, Katherine Elizabeth Shaw, and Nathalie Theimer Shaw; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at the Downing's Cemetery on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Betty Marshall officiating.2 |
