Anecdote* | 1777 | The 1745 will of Peter Bowdoin, Gentleman, directed that "My sons John and Preeson be kept at school until 14 and then John to be sent to Boston for apprenticeship with some merchant there, and Preeson to be sent to Philadelphia to be apprentice to William Allen Esq, or Mr. Andrew Hamilton, merchant." Keep in mind that this is Andrew Hamilton II, was the son of Andrew Hamilton I, who was in N'hamp Co, early and left for Philadelphia and that William Allen Esq married Andrew Hamilton I's daughter Margaret. Son John Bowdoin was sent to Boston, because there were cousins of Peter Bowdoin there, the branch that founded Bowdoin College. So Peter Bowdoin actually knew Andrew Hamilton II and his brother-in-law William Allen Esq. I keep thinking that Bowdoin Hamilton (c1776-a1821) may have been named after those Bowdoins & Hamiltons of Philadelphia, but I can't find anything to prove it.3 |

However, when William died in 1799 his estate was so small it was given to the Sheriff to settle and there was no mention of a child or widow. There is also no record of a marriage for William. Although he was on the personal tax list from 1783 to 1797, he had nothing to be taxed and never had a white male over age 16 with him. If Andrew was his son & born c. 1780, he would have been age 16 in 1796 and would have showed on William's tax list in 1797. |
