Deposition of John Sturgis, Jr., aged about 19 years: On the ninth of this month, John Sturgis, Sr., had been in the pasture and had brought horses to the house. He told John that he had seen a deer in the pasture; they decided "to go into the pasture and there stand to kill the deer, and also my father did advise my two brothers, William and Richard Sturgis, to go into the pasture another way to drive the deer thence, supposing the deer would come by either [me] or by [my] father, my two brothers before named, being each of them upon a mare." They "had not long been upon the design" when John heard a gunshot. He went toward the noise, supposing his father had killed a deer, but when he got there, he "saw his father with my brother William Sturgis in his arms, my father crying and lamenting in a distracted condition, and immediately [I] mounted the mare and took my brother William before me and carried him home, and presently my father sent me to Gargaphia to fetch some comfortable means for my brother Wm. Sturgis, but he was dead at my return." Sworn and signed before Wm. Custis on 10 December 1681, by Jno. (S) Sturgis.1 |
Court - namd in inqu* | 16 December 1681 | He was named in an inquisition on 16 December 1681 at Accomack Co, VA. Capt. William Custis, coroner, presented an inquisition to the court that was taken upon the death of John Sturges, Sr.'s son, William Sturges, who was killed by a shot from his father's gun. While shooting at some game, he "by misadventure did wound his said son, of which wound the said Wm. Sturges died." The court considered that the "action was unfortunately and merely casual, and the said Sturgis a very poor man and most sensibly afflicted at so near a loss as a son" and presented the case with copies of the documents to the Governor.1 |
Court - namd in inqu | 16 December 1681 | He was named in an inquisition on 16 December 1681 at Accomack Co, VA. The jurors sworn to make inquisition into the death of Wm. Sturgis, son of Jno. Sturgis, examined the evidence presented by Jno. Sturgis, Jr. and Jno. Sturgis, the father of both boys. They also went to the place where the accident occurred and unanimously concluded that "the death of the Wm. Sturgis came by a wound in his shoulder, which by his father's supposition was by a shot from his gun through a very close piney thicket shooting at some game and accidentally hitting his son through the thicket where he could not possibly see him." Signed by Wm. Custis, coroner, the verdict that "it was chance and no willful act" was returned by the jury, of which Wm. Browne was foreman.1 |

It is assumed that Elijah Laws Sr. did not marry a daughter of Joshua Sturgis and that Joshua Sturgis gave this Elijah Laws land in 1741 calling him son-in-law, which may have meant step-son as his mother Sarah Bevans married Joshua Sturgis after her husband William Laws died in 1729. It seems that if Elijah did marry Joshua Sturgis' daughter, that some of their children would have been mentioned in their grandfather Joshua Sturgis' will. |
