Edward Bennett Marshall1
M, b. 19 June 1814, d. 17 April 1890
Birth* | 19 June 1814 | Edward Bennett Marshall was born on 19 June 1814 at Dorchester Co, MD.1 |
Marriage* | 11 February 1840 | He married Harriet Barker on 11 February 1840.1 |
Anecdote* | | Edward appears to have been witness for the State of Maryland vs. Levin Waters in which Levin was accused of breaking and entering the store of Lewis Ross (Dorchester Court Minutes 1830-1847, p. 112 (Oct. 31, 1834)). Edward's migration eastward from St. Clair County and much of his real estate investments were made in following the early development of the Illinois Central Railroad. His home in Centralia, now a vacant lot still owned by descendants, was on the west side of the railroad tracks directly across the tracks from the railroad depot. He purchased a large area which he used as a circular horse race track, which he later gave to Centralia, and is now known as Fairview Park. As a widow Harriet was living with her son Charles in Central City, Marion County, Illinois at the time of the 1900 US Census, which states she was then the mother of eight children. She was apparently visiting her son James in Evanston when she died. A notice announcing the administration of her estate was placed in the Centralia Evening Sentinel for four weeks beginning Feb. 11, 1911. Notice of her death was published in the Chicago Tribune on Dec. 7, 1910 (Marion County Estate Records). At the time of the 1850 US Census in Washington Co., IL, a Lafayette Barker (b. 1827 IL) was a household member. Many members of Edward and Harriet's family are buried in Centralia's Elmwood Cemetery in Lot 11, Range 13.1 |

Frederick Bennett Marshall1
M, b. 1815, d. 26 January 1859
Birth* | 1815 | Frederick Bennett Marshall was born in 1815 at Dorchester Co, MD.1 |
Marriage* | 18 April 1843 | He married Mary Ann Halbert on 18 April 1843 at St. Clair Co, IL.2 |
Anecdote* | | Frederick (as well as his brother Edward) recorded a number of deeds in St. Clair Co. between 1837 and 1869. In 1875 in the land division Circuit Court case of Louisa Hamilton vs. Lena, Elizabeth, and Catherine Schneider, the Chancery Court sold some of Frederick's land to Emily McDonald (St. Clair Deeds 133, p. 584, Oct. 25, 1875). In the case (filed Jan. 14, 1880) People of the State of Illinois vs. Fred. B. Marshall, he owed $123.03 for taxes (and interest) due on land which he had purchased from his brother in 1858 (Case No. 44, Roll #245, Sequence 100071, Fee Book 40, p. 373). Although Frederick's burial place is unknown, Locust Creek Cemetery in Washington County southwest of Nashville is a likely candidate. It dates from 1854, and was refurbished to perpetual care in 1988 by Grace Methodist Church. Joseph A. Halbert and Robert D. McFeron, acquaintances of Frederick's, are buried here.1 |
Death* | 26 January 1859 | Frederick Bennett Marshall died on 26 January 1859 at Washington Co, IL.1 |
