Anecdote* | | John W. Thomas and his brother Richard B. Thomas went to California during the gold rush. They traveled in a sailboat and returned home once. It is believed they met with success. They found gold and sent money home many times. Some of the gold nuggets are still possessed by members of the family. A Dr. Bell said he was in California with the brothers and knew they had money buried. It reportedly was hidden in Mariposa, California. A photograph was taken in California during John's later years by Vaughan's Photograph Gallery in San Francisco.3 |

Richard Thomas came to Mariposa County in 1852 from Virginia with his brother, Capt. John W. Thomas. The Thomas Brothers were the main support for their three sisters back in Virginia. John Thomas was a Mariposa County Supervisor from 1860 to 1863. John was also a carpenter and cabinetmaker. He died August 23, 1882, leaving his wife with his family in Virginia. Richard Thomas was elected County Surveyor almost continuously from 1859 to 1884. He also held the position of United States Deputy Mineral Surveyor of Mariposa County. He lived with Green Coop and his brother in 1870. On March 6, 1884, Richard Thomas was traveling home from doing survey work in the lower portion of the county when he attempted to cross the swollen waters of Bear Creek.
