Death* | 18 December 1902 | Pvt. Richard J. Dickinson Dickinson died on 18 December 1902 at Snell, Spotsylvania Co, VA, at age 63. Mr. Richard J. Dickinson, a worthy citizen of Snell, was out in the woods yesterday morning with his sons, Richard and Weidey, and a hired colored man, felling trees for lumber. While Richard Dickinson and the colored man were sawing a pine tree down, Mr. Dickinson and Wesley were cutting a gum sapling about ten feet away. The pine started to fall in opposite direction to that anticipated, and Richard gave warning to his father and brother to get out of the way. Wesley stepped out to one side while Mr. Dickinson seemed to be so much excited that he could not move, and stood still holding his hands up until the tree crushed his skull, killing him almost instantly. Dr. Wm. A. Barris was sent for, but arrived too late to render any assistance. Mr.Dickinson was about 65 years old. Apparently, he could have easily gotten out of the way, had he not been too much excited. Tho family are very much shocked at his untimely end, and his wife is prostrated with grief. All the people sympathize with them in this sad and unexpected affliction. (Fredericksburg) The Free Lance - Dec. 23, 1902. Will - Mentioned in* | 13 January 1703/4 | Phillip was mentioned in a will on 13 January 1703/4 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Bridgett Foxcroft, widow of Capt. Isaac Foxcroft, Gentleman, directed in her will that a house was to be built for my Negro woman Betty on the plantation where Phillip Fenn now lives.1 |
Land bought* | 1727 | He bought land in 1727 at tract A63, between Onley & Onancock, Accomack Co, VA. Isaac and Mary Chase sold 100 acres of this tract to Phillip Phen, stating that Chase had bought it from his mother.3 |
Will* | 14 August 1743 | Phillip made a will on 14 August 1743 at Accomack Co, VA. In his will Philip Fenn appointed wife Mary Finn Executrix first and William Underhill my second I make my daughter Mary my heir to my plantation where I live containing 120 acres during her life & then to her son Elijah" Wife to have use of Plantation during her widow 3 grandchildren Catherine Ansello, William Ansello & Charles Finn residual legatees after my wife's deceased Witt: George Cutler, James Poolman, John Warrington. In order of prob: "Jacob Badger, guardlan to the son of Joseph Powell & Susanna his wife and to William Angelo, son of James Angelo & Sarah his wife, (for this purpose appointed) two of the daughters & co heirs of the within Philip Fenn, deceased, & William Underhill who intermarried with Mary, the other daughter & co heir of the said Philip, appeared and having nothing to object against the proving of the within will the same was proved and admitted to probate."2 |
Death* | before 25 October 1743 | He died before 25 October 1743 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was proved.2 |
Land left* | 1743 | He left land in 1743 at tract A63, between Onley & Onancock, Accomack Co, VA. Phillip Fenn left to his daughter Mary and then to her son Elijah, but no last names were given. Elijah may have died soon afterwards as 2 years later, William and Mary Underhill sold to John Dawson. Mary also had a daughter Sarah who married James Anslow, and they had a daughter Catharine who married Joshua Newberry, whom she survived. As Mary had only a life-interest, she had no right to sell, since the revision title would have gone to Sarah after the death of Elijah and Mary. Apparently Catherine Newberry, widow, recovered the title, as in 1768 she also sold to John Dawson to perfect his title.3 |
