I give my son Thomas Parsons one hundred and one acres of land which I bought of John Trower forever also a Negro girl Leah and her increase and Cesar my Negro carpenter. I give my son John Parsons the land bought of Reuben Joine with an addition of about 20 acres making in all about eighty acres also a Negro woman named Adah. I give to my son Marrot Parsons the land I had of George Smith containing by estimation one hundred acres also a Negro named Tully. All the remaining part of my estate I leave to be equally divided between my six children; William Parsons, Mary Costin, Esther Smith's children, Thomas Parsons, John Parsons and Marrot Parsons. Read is equally interested with me, we having agreed to divide the profits of which are to be equally divided between us after all expenses are paid. My interest in said claims I give to my daughter Maria Jane. I am interested in some claims against the United States in favor of Col. Francis Vigo dec’d and others, in which Judge John Law and Abner T. Ellis of Vincinnes Indiana are equally interested with me the same being now before Congress. Joseph Segar Esq. is equally interested with me, who is to attend to and prosecute to a final decision, and to have one half of my interest. Those claims if recovered I wish that my part to be equally divided between Richard H. Read, my son, & my daughter Maria Jane Read. [The words “and personal” between fifth and six lines, interlined before signed.] In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand this 21st day of Nov. 1855 Luther H. Read. Death*26 February 1876Richard Hall Read (Com of Rev) died on 26 February 1876 at Jeffersonia, Northampton Co, VA, at age 63. Mr. Richard Hall Read died at his late residence, Jeffersonia, in Northampton County, Va. Mr. Read was born Dec. 11th 1812 and was consequently, 63 years 2 months and 15 days old at the time of his death. I know that we are prone to ever estimate the worth and to exalt beyond measure the virtues of our departed friends, but of the subject of this sketch it may be truthfully said that he was a nobleman in the fullest acceptation of the term. Being possessed as he was of fine mental endowments, a superior judgment, great firmness and decision of character, he was highly qualified, in every essential particular, to take a place in the foremost rank among the people of his county….”.3
