The 1840 census lists Chandler as living nearby the proprietors of the Phoenix Factory, a stoneware manufactory. This factory was a source of experimentation and continuous improvements in the art of applying kaolin and iron slip decor to Feldspathic glazed stoneware. Chandler worked at Phoenix for several years prior to his partnership with Trapp. Phoenix factory ware and pottery turned at the Trapp and Chandler pottery are strikingly similar in decoration and body forms. Much of the pottery made at both of the sites is decorated in Kaolin and iron slip motifs. The Trapp and Chandler partnership probably spanned at least six years, beginning when Trapp acquired the site ca. 1844 and dissolving when Chandler found it to be economically advantageous to establish his own stoneware pottery ca. 1850. He solicited business in an advertisement in the May 15, 1850, edition of The Edgefield Advertiser. All orders were to be directed to him at Kirksey's X Roads, Edgefield District, SC. He stated that his jugs are marked "Chandler Maker, -- Warranted." The Trapp and Candler pottery site is the last known, intact site of a production center of Edgefield decorated stoneware. Edgefield stoneware is unique in the realm of ceramic production in this country. Artistically and technically the works of Thomas Chandler stand alone as monuments to the potter's art in the manufacturing of southern stoneware. Trapp and Chandler's work is deserving of recognition through the preservation of the site on which he masterfully created feldspatic glazed slip-decorated stoneware: a distinct type of pottery unparalleled in United States ceramic history.1
Census head*13 August 1850Thomas was listed as a head of household in the census of 13 August 1850 at The District of Edgefield, SC. HH#466 was headed by John Corley, a 21 year old farmer. This household included the Corley family, the Chandler family and the Brooks family. The Chandler family was headed by Thomas M. Chandler, a 40 year old stone ware manfactory, with real estate valued at $1,500, born in Virginia. Listed below him were Margarett Chandler, age 36; Caroline Chandler, age 10; Josephine Chandler, age 8; Eliza Ann Chandler, age 6; Thomas H. Chandler, age 4; Charles C. Chandler, age 2 and Mary Chandler, age 0.6
Death*23 July 1854He died on 23 July 1854 at Mecklenburg Co, NC.1
Anecdote* A note on a chart made by Pat Lynch that was sent to E. Spencer Wise in 1987 questioned if this Thomas M. Chander was the same as the Thomas M. Chandler (wife Eliza Ann Stewart) who had a daughter Almira who died in 1841, age 19. That would put the daughter born 1822 which would put his birth circa 1800. I was unable to verify this information on Ancestry.com in June 2016. However, if this was correct, this would not be consisent with Thomas Chandler, the potter, who was born circa 1810. (M.K. Miles.)2
