Marriage*1880He married Anna 'Annie' Frances Bunting, daughter of Solomon T. Bunting and Mary Eleline Thornton, in 1880 at Philadelphia, PA. Annie Frances Bunting married Henry Kleinberg in Philadelphia. They had one child - Laura- who died of pneumonia close to her 21st birthday. Henry was a partner in John Meadows Co., silver and gold plating business in Philadelphia. Their first home in Phila. was on Moore St. (hopefully big enough for all her relatives who moved in with them). They then purchased a brownstone at 3434 N. Broad St., which was torn down for Temple Univ. expansion. Annie, Henry, Laura, her mother Mary, and a woman, Phoebe Rutter, are all buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Philadelphia. Phoebe is probably a relative of Peter's and used the German spelling of Ritter.1,2

Birth*circa 1711Lt. Gov. James (of Andrew) Hamilton was born circa 1711 at Henberry Plantation, Chestertown, Kent Co, MD.3,2,4
Anecdote* The Hamiltons soon move up into Maryland and then to Philadelphia, where he became quite prominent and was the leading spirit behind the erection of the Sate House, better known today as Independence Hall. Their son James was equally prominent, holding many offices including that of governor of the Pennsylvania colony.1
Anecdote1725 On Andrew Hamilton's second visit to England in 1725 he took along one son, according to Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography. We know this son to have been James, as James Logan in writing Andrew Hamilton in London on May 17, 1725, writes of Hamilton's son, Andrew, being in Jolly's School along with his own son. Logan Letter Books, III, 42, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Andrew Jr. was admitted to the Middle Temple, London, on Sept. 6, 1729, and was called to the English bar on Nov. 24, 1732.4
Will - Uncle's*30 August 1725James was named in his uncle's will on 30 August 1725 at Accomack Co, VA. In his will Hancock Custis named: sons John (under 21), Southy, Levin & Theophilus Custis (last 3 under 18), brother Henry Custis, uncle Adam Michael, son-in-law Levin Gale & daughter-in-law (step-daughter) Leah Gale, Madam Broadhurst, late wife Mary Custis, cousins Susanna Preeson & Hannah Presson her sister & Elizabeth Upshire the daughter of Arthur Upshur & Sarah his wife, Robinson Custis son of my brother Henry Custis & Ann his wife, Littleton Kendall son of my sister Sorrowful Margaret and James Hamilton son of Andrew Hamilton & Ann his wife.3
Anecdote*between 1731 and 1783 James Hamilton was educated in Philadelphia and England before becoming a practicing lawyer in 1731. When on 28 December 1733 his father resigned as prothonotary of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, Hamilton was appointed to the office. In May 1734 James's father Andrew Hamilton sold him the town site of Lancaster, Pennsylvania for 5 shillings. Later that month, on 21 May, the younger Hamilton secured a patent from the Penn family for his grant on the Lancaster land. After the death of his father on 4 August 1741, James Hamilton inherited his 150-acre estate known as Bush Hill north of the city. He assisted his brother-in-law William Allen in the administration of lands purchased by his father to be used for the state house and surrounding public space. Elected to the provincial assembly in 1745, Hamilton was re-elected five times. He served as mayor of Philadelphia for one year from October 1745. During his tenure as Mayor, Hamilton kept a record of servants and apprentices bound before him, which historians have used to gauge the nature and extent of indentured servitude in Philadelphia -- and Pennsylvania more generally because Philadelphia was the entry-point for indentured servants coming into the colony from Europe. Hamilton became a member of the provincial council in 1746. He was commissioned by the sons of William Penn as lieutenant-governor, as which he served until 1754, then again from 1759 to 1763, then briefly also in 1771 and 1773. On 13 September 1761, Hamilton and William Allen conveyed Lot no. 1 and the other pieces of property obtained by Andrew Hamilton and Allen to Isaac Norris II and the other trustees in charge of purchasing property for the Philadelphia state house. The conveyance of this land completed the area of the Yard: property that contained the state house and the public spaces surrounding it. During the period that the federal capital was located in Philadelphia, William Hamilton was on an extended stay in England. He rented Bush Hill to the government for the vice-president to use as his residence. Bush Hill. The Seat of Wm. Hamilton Esqr. near Philadelphia, by James Peller Malcolm. Bush Hill was first the country seat of Andrew Hamilton, then passed on to his heirs. Hamilton was active in founding several institutions in Philadelphia, serving as president of the board of trustees of the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania) and as the head of the American Philosophical Society. As he did not have a surviving son, his nephew William Hamilton inherited his estate of Bush Hill. During the period that the federal capital was located in Philadelphia. During the Yellow fever epidemic of 1793, outbuildings at the Bush Hill estate were adapted for use as a fever hospital for several months.2
Court - named in ord*12 February 1750/51He was named in a court order on 12 February 1750/51 at Northampton Co, VA. On the motion of Thomas Presson, Gent., it is ordered that the bond from the Honorable James Hamilton Esqr to the said Thomas, with the certificate endorsed thereon be recorded.5
Land leased*14 April 1752He leased land on 14 April 1752 at Northampton Co, VA. An indenture of lease between Thomas Preeson and James Hamilton Esq was proved by the oaths of George Holden & Laban Stott, witnesses thereto & is ordered to be recorded.6
Anecdote20 October 1760 A letter from William Allen to D. Barclay & Sons of London written 20 Oct 1760 requested that that a "Mourning Ring" be purchased for James Hamilton following the death of his sister to contain the inscription "Margaret Allen; died the 12th of May 1760, aged 51."4
Anecdote1777 He was acting governor of Pennsylvania for the fouth time from 19 July till 20 Aug 1773. He was made a prisoner on parole in 1777, and lived at Northampton during the occupation of Philadelphia by the British.7
Death*14 August 1783He died on 14 August 1783 at New York City, NY.2
