William Stran owned considerable acreage, operated a large mill, and was an influential man in this part of the county during his entire life. He left the home place to his daughters Jane and Polly; he also had another daughter Elizabeth who married William Custis, son of William. In 1837 Mary P. (Polly) Stran sold 130 acres to Major Mason and in 1848 she left the balance of her property to her sister Jane, who in 1862 left to her (great) niece Eliza Susan Custis (husband William P.) for life and then to her daughter Elizabeth Jane Custis. In 1907 the mother and daughter united in a deed to George H. Ross for the house and 250 acres, and the next year he and his wife Mary E. sold 55 1/2 acres to the late Roy D. White, who two years later acquired 5 acres more "on which is situated the old main dwelling." Since 1938 it has been owned by his widow Virginia D. White. Whitelaw shows a piture of the Stran or Custis Place and a lengthly description of the old house.3
