Anecdote* Family information provided by Virginia 'Ginny' Custis Winslett reveals that evidently Margaret tried to cover up the fact that she was illegitimate with the following story that has been passed down by family members over several generations. "She was born at Highwood, VA (later information mentioned Drummondtown), that her mother was Margaret Custis who she was named after (thus she could never mentioned that her birth mother was Diadamia Russell) and her father was William Russell (actually William Slocomb) and her grandfather was Samuel Russell who had a pension for serving in the Continental Army during the Rev. War." After all these years and research by Stratton Nottingham, Mark Lewis and Ginny Winslett we now know the only actual truth to her story was that her grandfather Samuel Russell was from Virginia and had a pension for serving in the Rev. War. There is a possibility that there could be another Samuel Russell from somewhere else in Virginia who served in the Rev. War who had a proven granddaughter named Margaret. But Accomack County is the logical choice since it had both Russell and Custis families and it is assumed that is why the Margaret's family contacted Stratton Nottingham in the 1920s and Mark Lewis in the 1950s as they both worked in Accomack County.1
Census w/husband*4 June 1880Margaret was listed with her husband in the census of 4 June 1880 at at 309 12th Street, Philadelphia, PA. She was shown as Margaret Perry, a 66 year old wife & keeping house, born in Virginia as were both of her parents, in a household headed by John Perry, a 76 year old gentleman, born in Ireland.6
Death*2 January 1906She died on 2 January 1906 at at 1927 North 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA, at age 93. Her death certificate shows her as Margaret Custis Perry, widow, born 2 March 1812 in Virginia, as were both of her parents (whose names were left blank), died 2 January 1906, aged 93 years, 10 months & 00 days. She died at 3 o'clock p.m. and the chief cause of death was capillary bronchitis (which she had for 7 days) with a contributing cause shown as general senility (which she had for 36 months). It was signed by George M. Smith, MD, 806 North Broad Street. She was buried on 5 Jan 1906 in Monument Cemetery, Robert P. Morton, Undertaker, of 1444 South Broad Street.4
