Scherer, Mary H. Jarvis, Frances E. Scherer & Samuel Scherer, the Negroes to choose their masters & not be sold from Richmond or its vicinity as I feel unwilling to part man & wife & children. George N. Scherer, Frances E. Scherer &Samuel Scherer are under age. It is with reluctance that I am compelled to disinherit & discard my undutiful daughter Margaret who married contrary to my wish & advice to a worthless & infamous character who has bought her to want & suffer & who would gamble & drink up all I have & she not benefit & if I was to give her anything he or his creditors would devise some scheme to get it. It is my wish that she nor the children she may have, nor the infamous vagrant she has married shall ever own, possess, heir or in any way enjoy any portion of property I now have or may hereafter be possess of, nor heir anything that I have given my other children. Therefore I disinherit my daughter & any children she may have because she has married an infamous character that is not qualified to attend to any genteel business & devotes his whole time to idleness, drunkenness & gambling. Son George N. Scherer, James A. Bell or my relation John S. Tankard Extrs. Either one or the whole should act. Also one of them to act as guardian to Frances E. Scherer & Samuel Scherer during their minority. Witt: Phillip B. Tankard, Edward L. Bayly & Ephraim Tipton.6

Death*18 January 1929He died on 18 January 1929 at Northampton Co, VA, at age 98. Dr. Peter Franklin Scott, Shore's oldest residents, succumbs. He had a long and eventful life. On the date of his death he was 98 years, 6 months and 18 days old. On the first day of July 1929 he would have been 99. This remarkable and beloved character was the son of Hilary Scott, who was born in Northampton County, later moving to Nansemond County, where he married Miss Nancy Marvel of that county. Of this marriage Peter Franklin Scott was born in Suffolk on July 1, 1830. While a boy he came to Northampton County and spent some years as a clerk in stores at Johnsontown and Franktown. Later in life he became a teacher and served at Eastville, Machipongo and Onancock. During this early period of his life he was converted at Johnsontown Camp Meeting. It is reported, though the accuracy of the report is not vouched for, that Bishopp Doggett was the preacher. During his teaching career he was persuaded by the late Dr. Arthur Downing to read medicine, which work he pursued until the call of 1861. In this year he crossed the Chesapeake in an open boat to join the ranks of the Confederacy. In this cause he served as a physician and surgeon, chiefly in hospitals, during the war period. This service was given, for the most part, to Virginia and North Carolina. When the war closed he returned to Northampton and engaged in the practice of medicine, using saddle bags and taveling, as would be supposed, by horseback. He was living at this period of his life at "Woodstock," the home of the late Nathanile Savage Wescott. In 1870 he moved to Franktown where he lived until his death, engaging jointly in the practice of medicine and the drug business, which business was in active operation at the time of his passing and which had had his attention since 1880. His church affiliation was given to Franktown Methodist Church. He observed the scriptual injunction, "Keep thyself pure," to a remarkable degree. He observed every law to keep his body, mind and spirit free of taints. He was on the board of trustees of the church at the time of his death. Dr. Scott was married 5 times. On October 18, 1869 he married Ella Tankard who was the mother of 5 children, all of whom died in infancy. On April 18, 1882 he married Wessie Nottingham, the mother of one child who also died in infancy. On December 6, 1893 he married Ella F. Raleigh and on January 8, 1902 he married Mrs. Louise E. Pitts. The wife who survives him was Margaret A. Duncan, of Belle Haven.1,3
