Anecdote*1862 His family Bible and his Maryland Death Certificate shows him as William M. Carter who married Mary O. Adams and his daughter Dora Carter Taylor's 1976 obituary shows her as the daughter of William Costen Carter and Mary Adams Carter. Therefore it seem likely that his name was William M. Costen Carter.2,1

He was shown as William Carter, age 9 in HH#178 headed by Betsey Carter, a 60 year old house keeper. Also listed was Maria Carter, a 30 year old seamstress, who was evidently his mother.4 
Census w/another*4 June 1880William was listed with another family in the census of 4 June 1880 at Dublin District, Somerset Co, MD. He was shown as William Carter, a 19 year old boarder and working on farm in HH#3 headed by William Coston, a 55 year old farmer. Living next door in HH#4 were Elizabeth Carter age 58, Maria Carter her 40 year old daughter, and Upsher Bell her 11 year old grandson.5

Listed with him were the following Carters: Mary, a 35 year old wife; Bessie, a 14 year old daughter; Abraham, a 7 year old son; Gittie, a 3 year old daughter; and Lloyd L., a 1 year old son.7

Her second marriage was with John O. Mills, who died in 1947. Mrs. Miles was the daughter of the late William and Mary Adams Carter of Crisfield. She is survived by three daughters; Mrs. Edmond Brown and Mrs. Carl Gilbert, both of Baltimore, and Mrs. Paul Hicks, of Lakeland, FL; a step-son John O. Mills Jr. Crisfield; two sisters, Mrs. Dora Taylor, Tasley, VA, and Mrs. Jetta Richardson, Philadelphia; there brothers, Avery Carter, Savanah, GA, Lloyd Carter, Texas, and Leroy Carter, Deal Island. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be this Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bradshaw and Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Michael Landon, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Christian Baptist Church Cemetery, Perryhawkin.3

She was a member of Assawoman Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at Parksley Funeral Home, Friday, 15 Nov, at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Elmer Shield and interment was in Downings Cemetery, Oak Hall. The pallbearers were Messrs. William Lang, Broadus Nock, Alton Matthews, Austin Thomas, A.W. Matthews and Claude Nock. Mrs. Matthews is survived by a son Mr. George S. Matthews Jr. of Pocomoke and several nieces and nephews.3 
Burial*Lauretta was buried at Downings Cemetery, Oak Hall, Acc Co, VA.5
