Marriage*circa 1697He married Hannah [58] Scarburgh, daughter of Matthew Scarburgh and Hannah Scarburgh [17] Wise, circa 1697.1,2
Land bought*1697Daniel Payne I bought land in 1697 at tract N23, between Capeville & Cheriton, Northampton Co, VA. Thomas and Mary Thompson sold 150 acres to Daniel Paine; this was in the southwest corner of the original 700 acres. In 1702 William Willett had recovered it as part of tract N17, but for a consideration he and his wife Anne now gave a quitclaim deed to Paine who was then living there. In 1708 (sic) Thomas and Esther Griffith gave to their son John, saying that the land had come to Esther from her father Daniel Paine. Descent from John Griffith is uncertain, but somewhat later the bounds for an adjacent tract stated that a Hezekiah Griffith was then the owner here. (NOTE: The 1708 date must be have been somewhat later, as in 1709 Daniel Paine in his will left this 150 acres to his wife Hannah for her life and then to his sons John and Daniel. He also named his daughter Esther Paine (not Griffith) and she was to have two years of schooling, implying she was fairly young.)3
Will*9 May 1709Daniel made a will on 9 May 1709 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as Daniel Paine. To my two sons John and Daniel Paine my 150 acre plantation, my wife to have its use for life. To my daughter Esther Paine pine chest with lock and key. Wife extrx. To loving wife Hannah remaining estate during her widowhood and then to be div. by her and my dau. Esther. Witt: Hannah Capell, Nathaniel Capell. (Wise added that he requested his wife to give "to each of our children two years schooling" which seems to imply they were fairly young.)1,4,2
