Last Edited31 Mar 2014
Birth*circa 1766Eunice Short was born circa 1766 at Worcester Co, MD. Eunice Short being a daughter of Jacob Short and his wife Eunice 'Nicey' is based on several secondary facts, since she was not named in his will. 1st - a possible reason for not being named in his will was the fact that she was probably then married to her first husband Wingate West and did not need an inheritance. 2nd - she was named after her mother who had a fairly unusual name 'Eunice' nicknamed 'Nicey.' 3rd - on 21 Nov 1796 when she (as Eunice West), was granted administration on her husband Wingate West's estate, her uncle Shadrack Short was security for her. 4th - on 9 May 1813 it was her brother Noah Short Sr. (who was living near her and her second husband Purnel Carey in the 1820 census) who witnessed a deed of gift to her daughter Ginsey H. Carey from Purnel Carey's mother Hannah (Collins) Carey. 5th - in 1807 the estate of Job Short was distributed to 7 unnamed heirs and there was no widow. Since his brother Crawford was already dead, the 7 living siblings would have to include Eunice Short West Carey.3,4
Marriage*circa 1785She married Wingate West I, son of Thomas West I and Rachel (-----), circa 1785.5
Married Namecirca 1785 As of circa 1785,her married name was West.
Administrator*21 November 1796Eunice was named as administrator of an estate on 21 November 1796 at Sussex Co, DE. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Wingate West was granted to Eunice West with Shadrack Short security. (Note: Shadrack Short was her uncle.)4
Marriage*after 21 November 1796She married Purnel Carey, son of Ebenezer Carey and Hannah Collins, after 21 November 1796.1,6
Married Nameafter 21 November 1796 As of after 21 November 1796,her married name was Carey.
Anecdote*1807 The distribution of the estate of Job Short went to 7 (unnamed) heirs and there was no widow. (NOTE: Since his brother Crawford Short died by 1801 that would leave 7 siblings including Eunice Short West Carey.)7
Est Settm't Husb's*17 March 1813Eunice Short was named in her husband's estate settlement on 17 March 1813 at Sussex Co, DE. The administrative account on the estate of Wingate West was submitted by Purnal Carey & his wife Eunice.6
Est Settm't Husb's27 July 1818She was named in her husband's estate settlement on 27 July 1818 at Sussex Co, DE. The administrative account on the estate of Wingate West was submitted by Purnal Carey & his wife Eunice.6
Census w/son*1850Eunice was listed with her son in the census of 1850 at Dagsborough Hundred, Sussex Co, DE. She was shown as Eunice Carrey, age 84 in a household headed by William S. Carey, age 49.8

Last Edited29 Jan 2014
Birth*circa 1617Lambert Groten was born circa 1617.1
Marriage*before 17 February 1664/65He married Dianna Frame before 17 February 1664/65 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Browne Henricks and Diana, wife of Lambert Groten, were apprehended at Assatege by the Indians and Richard Bundick, the Indians being given 50 arms length of white shell bead wampum called Roanoke for each person. Ordered that Bundick, for his pains in bringing them in, be paid the equivalent of 500 lbs tobacco from Browne Henricks' goods, which were to be appraised by Mr. George Watson and Edward Revell. George Watson and Edw. Revell were appointed to appraise the things presented to the court belonging to Browne Henricks, and found that his goods amounted to 337 lbs tobacco. Since Richard Bundick was awarded 500 lbs tobacco for his pains in apprehending Browne Henricks and Diana wife of Lambert Groten, and since Henricks had paid only part, it was ordered that he stand indebted to Richard Bundick for 163 lbs tobacco and pay court charges.2
Headright*6 November 1673Lambert Groten was named as a headright on 6 November 1673 at Accomack Co, VA. Lamb Groton and Diana Fraime were among the 21 persons named on Jno. Stringer's patent for 1050 acres on lands of Occacomson & Assawoman.3
Marriage*before 11 December 1678He married Mary (-----) before 11 December 1678.4
Anecdote*16 December 1681 On 16 Dec 1681 in Accomack Court Col. John Stringer (attorney: Mr. Tankred) sued Lambert Groten for 2408 lbs tobacco. To prove the debt, Tankred produced an obligation in which Groten was bound for Stringer's discharging him from an execution upon a Northampton County order. He also produced a collateral obligation signed by Groten on 5 April 1680, to pay the sum "in gardener's work" at the rate of 600 lbs annually till the debt was paid. Lambert presented an account of 1330 lbs tobacco for work done according to his contract and swore that he never received any satisfaction for the same. Ordered that Groten pay 1078 lbs tobacco and court costs.5
Anecdote21 February 1682/83 On 21 Feb 1682/83 in Accomack Court Lambert Groten, who sued John Jenkins, Sr., could not prove his petition, so the suit was dismissed. (p. 4) Deposition of John Jenkins, Jr., aged about 32 years: Last August, at his father's house, John heard Lambert Grotten bargain and agree with his father to trim his orchard between that time and day. John's father gave him a pair of stockings at the time and promised to pay 1000 lbs tobacco after the job was complete. Signed and sworn in open court 21 February 1682/83, by John Jenkens. Deposition of Penellope Jenkins aged 33 years: About the last of November, Lambert Groten told Penellope that "her father Jenkins" and he had agreed not to trim the orchard till the next fall, and that he was going to trim James Bonewell's orchard. Groten said he would come again next fall "in the twelve days" and plant some trees and trim the orchard; then he would receive his payment "all in one lump, for he had, he said, rather be paid all at once than not." Signed and sworn in open court 21 February 1682/83, by Penellope (T) Jenkins. John Jenkins, Jr., petitioned that he and his wife were summoned to court as witnesses by Lambert Grotten and attended three days each. Ordered that Grotten pay 240 lbs tobacco for their attendance with court charges. (p. 5.)6
Anecdote*3 January 1683/84 On 3 Jan 1683/84 in Accomack Court that Mr. Geo. Hich Hack sued Lambert Groten, who failed to appear. If he did not appear at the next court, then the sheriff would have to abide the award of the court. Also on this date the suit of Lambert Groten against William Burton was referred to the next court.7
Tithable list*12 January 1686/87Lambert Groten was on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, on 12 January 1686/87. Maj. Charles Scarburgh informed the court that Lambert Groten had concealed himself as a tithable. Groten acknowledged his fault and "submitted himself to the court's mercy." He was acquitted this time; he was to pay his levy and court charges to the sheriff.8
Deposition*21 June 1687He gave a deposition on 21 June 1687 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Lambert Groten petitioned the court that he had lived in this country for more than 40 years. Now more than 70 years of age, Groten was not able to support himself by his own labor as formerly; he requested to be discharged from paying future taxes. Ordered that he pay court charges and be acquitted from future levies.1
Anecdote19 November 1696 Lambert Groten sued William Twyford for one pound "current money of England," but Twyford failed to appear. If he did not attend the next court, the sheriff would have to pay the amount awarded by the court. Col. John West (present high sheriff) moved that attachment issue against the estate of William Twyford for one pound current money for not appearing to answer Groten's suit. The attachment was granted against Twyford's estate to pay the debt and damages accruing on the action brought by Groten.9
Anecdote6 January 1696/97 The action brought by Lambert Groten against William Twyford was continued to the next court because of "Twyford being very dangerously sick & wholly unable at present to attend at this court by reason of his distemper."10
Anecdote3 March 1696/97 On 3 Mar 1696/97 in Accomack Court Lambert Groten petitioned to be paid for attending court for two days as a witness for John Cole against Catherin Glenn. Ordered that Cole pay Groten 80 lbs tobacco.11
Anecdotebetween 1697 and 1720 There were no Grotens in the Accomack County Order Books between 1697 and 1720 (volumes 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13) when Edward Kellam gave his daughter Mary, wife of Wm. Groten, land. Then there were no Grotens in the order books between 1720 and 1750 (volumes 15, 16 & 17), when William Groten was licensed to keep an ordinary at his house for a year.
