The petitioner being next of kin to the said John, prays that the estate of Peter may be ordered out of the hands of Josiah Willis and Margaret's estate out of the hands of Elizabeth Delicoat. Oath to England*30 March 1651He took the oath of allegiance to hereby engage and promise to be true and faithful to the Commonwealth of England as it is now established without King or House of Lords on 30 March 1651 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as John Browne.6 
Land patented1652He patented land in 1652 at tract N92 (Brownsville), Nassawadox - Sea Side, Northampton Co, VA. If was for 1,000 acres. Three years later it was reissued as 1,262 acres. The creek to the north is today called Upshur's or Brownsville Creek. 1656 John Browne (wife Ursula) left this land to his son John, but after some court action on a land exchange which later became void, the patent was reissued in 1661 to the son John. 1662 Son John's personal estate was divided between his brother Thomas, his sisters Elizabeth and William Smith who had married his sister Sarah; his brother Thomas inherited the land.7 
Will*26 August 1654John made a will on 26 August 1654 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as John Browne, planter. To my son John my whole 1262 A. tract on the seaboard side, and with the advice of his mother and my overseer to sell the same. To my son John (when 15) the cattle raised from a gift given him by Thomas Smyth, cooper. To my son Thomas my land at Nuswattocks where I now dwell, and my wife to sell the land for Thomas' benefit. To my son Thomas (under 15) 2 heifers. To my son Stephen (under 15) n. boy William and 2 heifers. To my dau. Mary (under 12) 2 heifers and a feather bed which I brought with me when I came last out of England. To my dau. Sarah (under 12) 2 heifers and the feather bed bought from John Nuthall. To dau. Elizabeth (under 12) 2 calves and £20 due me in Holland. My beloved wife Urseley extrx. to have the remainder of my estate for her maintenance and that of my children, and if she should marry to divide the same according to her motherly affection. My friends (Capt.) Thomas Johnson and John Hinman to oversee. Witt: Thomas Johnson, John Hinman, William Westerhouse.3 
Death*before 22 January 1655/56He died before 22 January 1655/56 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was proved. John Brown is the eldest son, and Thomas Browne the 2nd. The 924 guilders, 11 stinres (?) 8S which you me, I have put down to Capt. Mitchell's account & made him debtor for it (as by his & your order). I desire to hear from you with what speed you can; there is a ship going from Rotterdam towards Virginia; with the first easterly wind I suppose she runs more than ordinary danger I have not else but rest."4

Savage will be promoted thereby, shall order and direct to make sale of the said three lots of land, or such part thereof as the said county court of Accomack shall order and direct, whereof the said Severn E. Savage died seized, and convey the same to the purchaser or purchasers thereof in fee simple. And the said commissioners, or any two of them, are hereby authorized to ----- the proceeds of the sales of the said lands, or such part thereof as may be necessary, towards the payment of debts remaining due from the estate of the said descendant, and which are a legal or equitable lien on said lands; and the balance of the said proceeds, if any, they shall account for and pay to the widow such part thereof as the said county court of Accomack shall adjudge and decree equitable, not exceeding one-ninth(?), and the balance to the guardian of the said infant daughter of the said Severn E. Land cause29 March 1814She was named in a land cause on 29 March 1814 at Accomack Co, VA. Came Margaret Savage, by William H. Smith, her next friend, and brought her bill in chancery against William S. Custis; That a certain John Savage late of this county was in his lifetime and at the time of his death seized in his demesne as of fee among other lands of a valuable plantation and tract of land situate on Metompkin in this County, containing about 500 acres, which said tract of land the said John Savage had purchased of a certain James Henry, and being so seized thereof on the ____ day of ____ 1792, the said John Savage departed this life, having first made his last will & testament, in which said will the said John Savage among other things directed that his plantation on Metompkin should be rented until his son Joseph arrived to the age of 18 years, and that then the same should be equally divided between all his children who were then living; when the said Joseph arrived to the age of 18 years, there were living of the children of the said John Savage William, Thomas, Charles, Joseph, Severn, the father of your oratrix, and Ann, the wife of a certain William Stone, George, another of the sons of the said John Savage having departed this life previous to that time; on the 8 June, 1803, the aforesaid William Savage conveyed to William S. Custis of this county, who had intermarried with the widow of the said John Savage, all his right to the aforesaid plantation; shortly after the said Joseph arrived to the age of 18 years, viz: on the ____ day of ____ 1808, a suit in chancery was instituted in this court by the said William S. Custis & Margaret, his wife, S. E. Savage, Ann Savage & Joseph Savage vs. Thomas W. & Charles Savage for the purpose of assigning to Margaret, the wife of William S. Custis, her dower in the said land, and also for the purpose of dividing the balance of said land among those entitled thereto; division made & dower assigned under said decree; on the 13 July, 1803, Thomas W. Savage conveyed to Severn E. Savage, your oratrix father, all the part of said land which had been alotted to him, also all his right in the reversion in that part of land which had been assigned to Mrs. Custis as her dower; on the 4 Apr. 1812, Joseph Savage conveyed to the said William S. Custis the part of said land which had been allotted to him, and also his part in the reversion in Mrs. Custis' dower; on the 21 Sept., 1811, William Stone & Anne his wife conveyed to William S. Custis all the said Anne's original share of the said land which had been allotted to her, and also her share of Mrs. Custis' dower, and on the 26 Feb. 1810, Charles Savage conveyed to the said William S. Custis all his right in the said land which had been assigned to Mrs. Custis for dower; on the 26 Aug. 1813, the said Margaret Custis departed this life; on the 6 day of Sept. 1808 Severn E. Savage, the father of your oratrix departed this life intestate, leaving your oratrix his only child & heir at law. Your oratrix is further advised that she is entitled as heir of said Severn E. Savage to 1/3 of the land which had been allotted to Mrs. Custis for her dower, and that the aforesaid William S. Custis, by virtue of the said several conveyances aforesaid is entitled to the two remaining thirds thereof &c.1

Winder, land whereon I now live, lying to the eastward of a line commencing at a small cedar bush on the north of the dwelling house under the bank near the water mark and running thence a straight course in a southerly direction to a small mulberry tree thence due south to the edge of the field over the branch, thence easterly along the edge of the said field so far as that a straight line from Peter Bowdoin's outer gate shall cut off to the eastward of the said tract two hundred and fifty acres including twenty five acres heretofore conveyed by me to my said son Levin Y. Winder. All the balance of said tract of land lying to the westward of the line here in before described, I give to my son John H. Winder, for and during the term of his natural life with remainder over to my granddaughters; Lauretta, Charlotte, Susan and Rosina Winder. To my daughter Mary H. Winder six hundred dollars. All the rest of my estate I give to my daughter Mary and my sons, George, Samuel and Nathaniel. My son Nathaniel J. Winder executor. Signed, Jno Winder. Witnesses: Harriet B.
