Anecdote*7 July 1901 On 7 July 1901 the following article was published in the Richmond Dispatch. --
Eastern Shore Man, An Old-Line Whig in Politics. Dr. John T. Wilkins Sr., a Notable Figure. His eldest son, Henry Houston Wilkins, the youngest Confederate Volunteer from that section - Four Sons are Living - A Social Event. Among the old men of the Eastern Shore of Virginia no one is better known or stands higher in the public regard, than Dr. John T. Wilkins Sr., of Northampton. He belongs to one of the oldest and most honored families in that region of the State, the Wilkinses being among the earliest English settlers of the Eastern Shore. He is the son of the late William E. Wilkins Esq. and was born in Northampton county September 26, 1820. He received his academic training at Dickerson College at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and was graduated in medicine from the Jefferson Medical College, at Philadelphia, then the centre of medical knowledge in this country. Returning home, he settled at the village of Franktown, in the northern part of his native county, where for twenty years or more he practiced his profession with great success and distinction. For many years prior to the war of secession he was the presiding magistrate of his county, and remained in that position as long as that honored system of dispensing justice continued in vogue in Virginia. - AN OLD-LINE WHIG - In politics, he belonged to the school of old-line Whigs, and cast his first vote in a presidential election in 1844 for gallant "Harry of the West." He was stoutly opposed to the policy of secession; but when Virginia went out of the Union he went with her; and his eldest son, Henry Houston Wilkins, then only 13 years old, enlisted in the Confederate army, as the youngest volunteer from the Eastern Shore. Dr. Wilkins is an omnivorous reader of magazines, newspapers, and standard literature, and as such takes a lively interest in what is going on in the world. He has never been an active participant in politics; but since the civil war he has always voted the Democratic ticket, except when he thought the Democrats were advocating wrong principles, and then he has made it a rule to stay at home. Believing in the gold-standard of value for the national currency, and that the 16 to 1 policy of Mr. Bryan would bring disaster to the country, he declined to vote for the Democratic candidates on the national ticket in 1896. Last year he was as vigorously opposed to the colonial policy of the Republicans as he was the currency plank in the Democratic platform, and he again emphasized his opposition to the leading policies of both parties by remaining away from the polls. - HIS FOUR SONS - Dr. Wilkins has four sons - Henry Houston, William, Dr. John T. Jr. who represented Northampton and Accomac in the House of Delegates for several terms, and was subsequently Fish Commissioner for the State of Virginia, and Charles Frederick; the last named being the owner of Wilkin's Beach, now a famous watering place on the bay side of Northampton. Mrs. Dr. Kendall Addison, of Eastville, is his only surviving sister, his other sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Turner, having died about two years ago. Until recently Dr. Wilkins resided at the old family homestead, near Eastville, the county seat of Northampton; but for the last few years he has lived with his son, Dr. John T. Wilkins Jr., at his beautiful home, "Vaucluse," on Hungars creek. "Vaucluse" was the ancestral home of Judge Abel Parker Upshur, one of the ablest men that sat in the Virginia convention of 1829-30. In spite of his advanced age, Dr. Wilkins remains vigorous and active in both mind and body. - A SOCIAL EVENT - His granddaughter, Miss Grace Wilkins, daughter of Mr. Charles Frederick Wilkins, and a young lady of rare beauty and accomplishments, will be married next Wednesday to Dr. Griffin W. Holland, a prominent young physician of Northampton, in Christ's Episcopal Church at Eastville; and on that happy occasion the venerable Doctor is the be the chief guest of honor. There will be many people present to witness the ceremony and extend their congratulations to the happy young couple; and they will not forget to pay due honor to the fine old gentleman, who has served his county well, whose life has been without reproach, and whose example has always been an inspiration to his neighbors for higher things. (NOTE: The article included a well drawn sketch of Dr. Wilkins.)2
Death*16 November 1910He died on 16 November 1910 at Northampton Co, VA, at age 90.3
Burial*John was buried at Hungars Church Cemetery, Northampton Co, VA. His tombstone shows him as John T. Wilkins Sr. (husband of E.A.R.) 26 Sep 1820 - 16 Nov 1910.3
