John Luke1

M, b. 1647, d. before 28 May 1709
Last Edited24 Dec 2012
Birth*1647John Luke was born in 1647. In a deposition in 1694, Luke gave his age as 47, so he must have been born in 1647, which would make him much younger than Ann, and she is supposed to have married Yardley in 1649 when he came to Virginia with him.2
Marriage*before 29 December 1671He married Ann Custis, daughter of Henry Custis and Joan Whittington (widow), before 29 December 1671. They were evidently married by this date as John Luke and wife Anne delivered Elizabeth Vansoldt's estate to her son John Raynhart, as he had turn age 18 and they were his guardians. According to Whitelaw, not long after John Willcocks death in 1662 John Luke and a wife Ann, were established on 400 acres of tract N73 which John Willocks had bought from Thomas & Mary Selbe in 1660. And it is assumed that John Luke had married the widow Willcockes and that John Willcocks unborn child did not live, as no one who could be identified as such appears in the records concerning this property. After the death of Anne, Luke had a second wife Susanna, who bore him 2 sons, but whom he survived.1,3
Deposition30 December 1675John Luke gave a deposition on 30 December 1675 at Northampton Co, VA. On 30 Dec 1675 in N'hamp Co Court Jno Luke gave deposition that on 2 Dec being at the house of John Furrs at which time came Marcus Hagamond. William Cascoine, Constable and Henry Gascoine came to search the house of Furrs (by a warrent from Capt. Isaac Foxcroft) for some Ribband which Furrs pretended was stole from his son-in-law (meaning step-son) James Nevels by Marcus Hagamond. And then & there Furrs called Marcus a rogue, theefe & pick pocket rogue, and that Furrs would prove Marcus to be with abundance of such approbrious(sic) language and more John Furrs said I am said to be the biggest theefe in Accomack, but I think Marcus Hagamond is a verier theefe than I and that if Furrs pleased to indict him he could hang him. On the same day the deposition of Henry Gascoine aged 22 years or thereabouts. That on 2 Dec instant going to John Furrs house with his father who went there to make search of some Ribband which Furrs alledged Marcus Hagamond had stole then & there heard John Furrs call Marcus Hagamond thee rogue & pickpocket rogue and said that if he were minded to indict him he could hang him and further said James to bee the veryest rogue in Accomack, but I think Marcus Hagamond is a verier Rogue than I am. The deposition of Martin Simpson aged 28 years or there abouts saith that being in the company with Marcus Hagamond, Marcus told him he took the key of James Nevells chest out of his pocket & caused the same to bee unlocked & put the key in Nevells pocket again. The Deposition of Elizabeth Gunter, aged 20 year or thereabouts, heard Marcus Hagamond declare that he had James Nevills key of his chest the Saturday night & was at his chest and did hear him also that night declare (after some combustion in Furrs house) that they were all well & went to hide the cutlasse in James Nevells chest but could not find it. The depostiion of Mathew Holst, aged 25 years or thereabouts, he hearing John Furrs tax Marcus Hagamond about some Ribband taken out of James Nevells chest heard Marcus declare that he took the key out of James Nevells pocket and went to the chest but took nothing out & put the key in his pocket again. Anne Simpson, aged 16 years or thereabouts, assented to what is above declared.4
Marriage*circa 1686He married Susanna (-----) circa 1686 at Northampton Co, VA.5
Deposition*28 January 1696/97John Luke gave a deposition on 28 January 1696/97 at Northampton Co, VA. On 28 Jan 1696/97 John Luke of Northampton County, VA swore in open court in N'hamp Co that he was aged 47 or there abouts. That in the years 1673, 74, 75 and etc. being in company with Mr. Thomas Harmanson Sen'r at the house of John Furrs which was in Church Neck of Hungers (so called) did then and there hear the said Mr. Thomas Harmanson declare to Mary the then wife of the aforesaid John Furrs, that her former husband Richard Nevell was a very honest man, and that he had truly and honestly paid him for a certain quantity of land in Matchepungo called, "Nevells Neck," where upon the said Mary Furrs demanded of the said Harmanson all the papers relating to the said tract of land in behalf of her son James Nevell to whom Mr. Harmanson was guardian. The siad Mr. Harmason replied you shall have the very paper belonging to you any ways relating to Matchepungo for God forbid I should do the boy any wrong for his father paid me honestly for the land and further saith not.6

Ann Custis b. c 1633, d. b 1686

Birth*15 September 1901George A. James was born on 15 September 1901 at Accomack Co, VA.1
Anecdote* In 1904, when he was three, Alfred was living in the hamlet of Trower and keeping a general store there. They lived in a rented house (which though abandoned is still there). The story goes that little George pulled over a kerosene lamp onto his mother, who suffered severe burns and died as a result. Shortly thereafter my grandfather Alfred remarried. In any event George A. James left the eastern shore to fight in the First World War. When he returned he did not stay on the Shore, but left to lead a very colorful life (as I recall the stories from my grandmother and mother). He would come back to town driving very expensive cars and with women of a certain reputation, flashing lots of money. He would then leave and have periods where he fell on hard times, alternating between periods of extravagance. He also fought in WWII, and was married three times.1
Death*26 December 1958He died on 26 December 1958 at age 57.1
Burial*George was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. He is interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Section 44, grave 257. Also buried there is his last wife Laura.1
