Mr. John C. “Jack” Gray, 88, beloved husband of Barbara Beebe Massey Gray and a lifelong resident of Modest Town, VA, walked graciously into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 with his loving family by his side. Born June 11, 1931 in Modest Town, he was a son of the late Hilton Gray and Minnie Ross Gray. A proud alumnus of Old Dominion University, Mr. Gray earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Social Science, and his Master of Science degree in School Administration. He was a longtime educator and administrator for Accomack County Public Schools, having worked as a teacher at Atlantic High School for six years; served as Principal at Parksley, Atlantic and Arcadia High Schools for a combined 24 years; and served on the Accomack County School Board for six years. Following his retirement, Mr. Gray held two four-year terms on the Accomack County Board of Supervisors, serving as Chair during his second term. Reared in a Christian home, Jack was a lifelong member of Modest Town Baptist Church, and where he served as a Deacon for more than 50 years. Mr. John Charles “Jack” Gray is responsible for inspiring, molding, and enriching the lives of countless Accomack County students through his many posts as an educator and administrator on the Eastern Shore. His legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to his community, his church, and his family, will be forever cherished by those who had the great pleasure to know him. In addition to his wife, survivors include his five sons, Mike Massey and wife Mary of Onancock, VA, Kent Massey and wife Wendy of Stockton, MD, Jay Massey and wife Amy of Wartrace, TN, Jeff Massey and wife Dana and Jamie Massey and wife Diane, all of Greenbackville, VA; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and cousins, Diane Hurley and Debbie Blanchard and her husband John. Funeral services will be held at the Modest Town Baptist Church on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at 3:00 p.m., with The Reverend John Cullop officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. There will be a visitation at the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Saturday, June 15, 2019, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Modest Town Baptist Church Memorial Fund, c/o Tina Wessells, P.O. NOTES: She gave deed of gift to her three youngest children Elizabeth, Ann, and John Billyoate, naming her brother (meaning brother-in-law) Armstrong Foster feoffee in trust, requesting that if all three children should die, that the cattle go to the children of her former dec'd husband John Foster. Bridgett Billyoate, widow, married John Vynes.2 
Land patented*1674He patented land in 1674 at tract N64, south of Marionville, N'hamp Co, VA. In 1656 a patent was issued to John Billiott for 1,050 acres. It was reissued to him 1661 and in 1674 to John Jr., who had succeeded his father. In 1722 young John had sold all but 200 acres before his death in this year when he left 100 acres each to his sons John and William, and by this time the spelling of the family name had become Beloate. The land bequeathed was in the southwest corner of the whole tract and John received the part on the east side of the road and William that on the west side. It later developed that the old seaside road used for this division was considerably east of its present course and, with the change to the present location, all except a few acres became east of the new location of the road. In 1741 William and Dorothy Belote sold his part to h is brother John. In 1743 John Belote left to his wife Rachel and then to their son John. The latter left no will and presumably was succeeded by a son William who appeared as the owner a few years later. Before he died in 1789, William had acquired additional land to the north of the old home place.3

In 1680 Owen & Sarah Edmunds resold to Capt. Nathaniel Walker. In 1676 Billiote sold 300 acres to Walker, it being the north part of the land west of the present road. In 1681 Walker sold the whole 650 acres to John Tankred. In 1683 Tankred sold 200 acres to Mathew Patricke. In 1779 the will of John Tankard directed that his land be sold. His daughter Sarah married the William Belote who owned the old Belote home place.3

Defendant & the said Roberts appearing, being summoned by the sheriff, and the said Roberts assumed in Court to put in a direct and perfect answer to the said Foster Jacob and Watts bill in Chancery. The said Roberts was to lodge in the Clerk Office 3 days before the next court to. On 15 Nov 1715 a bill in Chancery was read in Court which was exhabited by Robert Foster, one of the sons, and Risdon Jacob and Bridgett his wife, one of the daughters, and Smith Watts and Elizabeth his wife, one of the other daughters of Robert Foster, late of N'hamp County, Dec'd, plaintiff and Wm. Roberts Extr of the will of Elizabeth Foster, who was the Extrx of the will of Robert Foster, being called and the plaintiff appearing in person and Defendant by his attorney Mr. James Kempe and after a long debate between them the court is of the opinion that said bill in chancery is insufficient and not perfect in several parts, therefore the said bill is chancery is dismissed and plantiff to pay cost.4
