Biography*Mr. Claude W. Drewer, Sr., a highly respected citizen of Saxis, VA, died Wednesday afternoon, 23 Apr 1958, at 4:00 p.m. at the Nassawadox Hospital. Mr. Drewer succumbed after a brief and sudden illness at the age of fifty-four. He was born and reared in Saxis, VA, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd M. Drewer. A man of fine character and personality, he had many devoted friends. He had been an agent for the Home Benefical Life Insurance Co., for over eighteen years. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 24 Apr 1958).

Anecdote*11 July 1931 On 8 July 1931 Gay Evans, little daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Evans, met with a peculiar accident Saturday, July 4th, when she fell head first down a 5 ft well in the yard of L.M. Drewer. There was some water in the well, but as she was conscious when she hit the bottom, she quickly turned herself around and stood up in the water. William Drewer was held by his feet and formed a human ladder to get her from the well. She was unhurt, to the pleasure of her many friends, and is none the worse for the experience.4

A graveside service, Onancock Cemetery, was held Thursday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Matthew Killmon officated. Other than his wife, Mr. Nicholson is survived by a daughter, Ann N. Mills and husband Danny W. of Onancock; a sister, Margaret Sue Bundick and husband Clarence Lee of Exmore; several nieces; two grandchildren, Leah Virginia Mills of Richmond, VA and Joseph Nicholson Mills of Onancock. He was predeceased by a brother, William A. Nicholson..3

Mr. Randolph Lee Drewer of Saxis, Virginia, husband of the late Reva Mister Drewer, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Hartley Hall Nursing Home in Pocomoke City, MD. Born in Saxis on April 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Claude Wesley Drewer and the Late Hilda Northam Drewer. Mr. Drewer was a retired Truck Driver for Holly Farms. He was a member of the Pocomoke United Methodist Church in Grotons, a loving family man, and avid fisherman. Randolph is survived by his brothers, Claude Wesley Drewer and his wife, Vicki of Snow Hill, MD and Charles Northam Drewer of Dundalk, MD, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, December 11, at 11:00 AM from the graveside of the Downing's Cemetery in Oak Hall, VA. The Rev. Maury Enright will officiate. John Ellis Drewer Sr., better known as Jack, 78, husband of Joan Jester Drewer and a resident of Belle Haven, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 18, 2009 after a short illness. He was the son of the late John Henry Drewer and Mildred Drummond Drewer. Mr. Drewer was a farmer all his life, still in the process of preparing the land for spring planting. Other than his love for farming the land, it gave him much joy to share white potatoes and sweet potatoes with family and friends. He was a member of Craddockville United Methodist Church, treasurer of Craddockville Methodist Men’s Club, member of the Virginia Sweet Potato Association, Pungoteague Ruritan Club and Exmore Moose Lodge. He graduated from Central High School and Goldey-Beacom Business School. Other than his wife, Jack is survived by two children, Gayle D. Shaw and her husband David of Craddockville, Virginia and John Ellis Drewer Jr. of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Troy Jay Farlow and his wife Dr. Laura Kerbin of Williamsburg, Virginia and Amanda Drewer Shaw of Charleston, South Carolina; a sister, Anne D. Sterling and her husband Bill of Cedarview, Virginia; three nieces and four nephews; eleven great nieces and nephews, recently a great-great nephew; and many special cousins. He was predeceased by a brother and business partner, Newman Henry Drewer. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at Fairview Lawn Cemetery Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Kenneth Armstrong officiating. Pallbearers are Bill Sterling, Lee Lamm, John Campbell, Bill Sterling Jr., Newman Craig Drewer, Booker Coston, and Seymour Parker III. Graveside services were held at Belle Haven Cemetery at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 28 June, by Rev. Robert L. Gue and Rev. Douglas Tanner. Mr. Drewer was a member of the Craddockville United Methodist Church and served on the board in various capacities. He was also a member of the board of directors of the First Virginia Bank and the Virginia Vegetable Growers Association and a past member of the board of directors of the Virginia Sweet Potato Commission, the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club and Broadwater Academy. He was a lifelong member of the Craddockville United Methodist Church, a 50-year plus member of Exmore Moose Lodge 683 and Pungoteague Ruritan Club, and a former board member of Accomack County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed hunting, boating, maintaining his yard and farm and spending time with his family and his cat Oliver. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 19, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Craddockville United Methodist Church with Reverends Rob Kelly and Doug Tanner officiating. Interment will be held in Belle Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Craddockville United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. June Custis, P.O. Bonnie had many interests and loves throughout her life, including playing tennis, gardening, arranging flowers for many friends and events, fishing, and cooking. She had been active in garden clubs, having opened her house for Garden Tour, and the local hospital auxiliary. She had been supportive to her husband of thirty-one years, in the family farming business and operation. She is survived by her three children, Holly Drewer Erwin and her husband William Swadley Erwin, III of Annandale, VA, Kelly H. Drewer and Terry Langley of Craddockville, VA, and N. Craig Drewer and his wife Michelle Houghton Drewer of Colonial Heights, VA and Craddockville; four grandchildren, Alexis, Wade, Craig and Hannah; and her beloved friend, Blanche Sarrotte of Belle Haven. A memorial service will be conducted from the Craddockville United Methodist Church on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 10:00 AM with the Reverend Bobbie J. Henley officiating. A luncheon at the church will follow the service.3

Frances Elizabeth Rusher Drewer, 98, beloved wife of William Thomas Drewer and a resident of Onancock, VA, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Riverside Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox, VA, with her devoted daughter Rosalie Daley at her side. She had resided at the Hermitage of the Eastern Shore for the last four years. Frances was born in Norfolk, VA on November 25, 1917 to Andrew Bernard and Rosa Hogwood Rusher. She grew up in Portsmouth, VA, where she later met her husband William on a blind date. He was an insurance agent assigned to the Portsmouth area. They were married in 1940 and soon afterward, William was transferred to an office in Salisbury, MD. After living in Salisbury briefly, they were able to relocate to Onancock, VA. Frances was a very devoted wife, a loving mother to her four children and a dear friend to many. She loved baking and was well-known for her “Hot Milk” cakes, of which she made many. Some of her favorite pastimes in later years were knitting and crocheting. Many family members, friends and lots of babies were blessed with her beautiful afghans. She loved spending time with her family and friends and nothing made her happier than feeding them well and making sure they were well-cared for. Frances is survived by her daughter, Rosalie Daley and husband, Bill of Onancock; her granddaughter, Virginia (Jenny) Taylor Haga and her daughter, Virginia Leigh of Lynchburg, VA; her granddaughter, Beth Wheeler and husband, Wayne, and their two sons, Michael and wife Sarah and son Evan, and Benjamin Wheeler, all of North Chesterfield, VA; her grandson, Christopher Drewer and wife, Blythe and their daughter, Shea of Nottingham, MD; her grandson, Christopher Daley and wife, Jessica of Onancock; her great-granddaughters, Delaney Taylor and Sydney Taylor of Snow Hill, MD and Linsey Otto of Virginia Beach, VA; her daughter-in-law, Isabelle Drewer of Newport News, VA; and several dear cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, Frances was predeceased by her two sons, William T. Drewer, Jr. and George B. Drewer; daughter, Irene E. Drewer; grandson Brian T. Taylor; and son-in-law, Eldred Thomas Taylor. She was also predeceased by her two brothers, Dr. William D. Rusher and his dear wife, Helen, and Andrew B. Rusher, Jr. Frances graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA and worked for C & P Telephone Company after graduation. Her dream as a young woman was to become a nurse. While she was never able to pursue that professionally, she lovingly cared for many family members and friends throughout her life. Frances was a member Market Street United Methodist Church and, in her earlier years, she was an active member and former president of the Soroptimist Club of Accomack County. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Hermitage of the Eastern Shore and the Fourth Floor medical staff and the Hospice team of Riverside Memorial Hospital for their attentive and loving care of Frances. A graveside service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock, with The Reverend J. Barton Weakley officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Market Street United Methodist Church, 75 Market Street, Onancock, VA 23417. Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements by the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home.

Mr. Drewer was presently employed wih Civil Service as an engineering technician at Public Works, Norfolk Naval Station. He formerly worked with Newport News Shipbuilding and was a member of Parkview Baptist Church and Warwick Moose Lodge 1711. Mr. Drewer was preceded in death by his father, brother and one sister. He is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Isabelle C. Drewer of Newport News; one son, Christopher T. Drewer and his wife, Blythe, of Baltimore, MD; one step-daughter, Beth Wheeler and her husband, Wayne of Chesterfield, VA; one sister, Rosalie Taylor of Atlantic; his mother, Frances Rusher Drewer of Onancock; and two step-grandchildren..1
