Will - Father's*30 August 1734William was named in his father's will on 30 August 1734 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son William Ewell (under age) in the will of Solomon Ewell, wife Comfort. He was given the land purchased of Samuel Davis & Naomi his wife, being 450 acres. According to Whitelaw, this land became involved in a suit; after the death of her first husband Samuel Davis, Naomi married Joseph Stockley, who discovered that she had not been privately examined before she signed the deed to Solomon Ewell with Samuel Davis, so Stockley now claimed that the sale should be declared void. He was successful, but he and Naomi deeded it in three parts, as follows: in 1747 the water-front end to William Ewell; in 1748 the next 100 acres to Thomas Matthews, who had married Naomi, the daughter of Samuel and Naomi Davis; the upper 100 acres to George Matthews, who had married another Davis daughter, Comfort..1,2

Land sold*1757William sold land in 1757 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that William Ewell & wife Leah sold the 200 acres at the water-front that he acquried in 1747 from Joseph Stockley & wife Naomi to William Nicholson, who died intestate in 1760 leaving a widow Arcadia and 24 years leater, William Ewell confirmed the title to John Nicholson, son of William..2 
Land deed named in*10 April 1769He was named in a deed on 10 April 1769 at Holden's Creek, Accomack Co, VA. Samuel Beavans of Accomack Co sold to George Holden, Gent, of the same place, for £83:6:8 1/9 part of 950 acres on Crooked Creek in Accomack Co, late the estate of William Anderson late of Accomack Co, Gent, dec'd, the great-grandfather of Elizabeth, the mother of the said Samuel, who was one of the 3 daughters and coheirs of Samuel Davis & Naomi his wife, both dec'd, one of the daughters of Elias Taylor & Comfort his wife, both dec'd, Comfort was one of the daughters of the said William Anderson, who in his will mentioned and devised unto Francis McKemie & Naomi his wife his plantation at Pocomoke containing 950 acres for and during their Natural lives and then to the child or heirs of the aforesaid daughter Naomi and for want of such heirs then to be devised to his granddaughters by his said daughter Comfort and to her heirs forever as coheirs amongst them & to their lawful heirs forever, which said granddaughters were Elizabeth, Naomi & Comfort and named in the will bearing the date 23 July 1698 and recorded in the Court of the said County of Accomack. Said parcel of land is now in the possession of the said George Holden and Ann his wife, the sole surviving daughter and heir at law of the said Francis Mckemie & Naomi his wife in right of the said Anne as tenant in Fee Tail and whereas Expectant on the death of the said Anne without issue the division of the said 950 acres will by virtue of the said devisee be devised one third part thereof in William Whittington, the grandson and heir at law of the said Elizabeth the devisee who intermarried with William Whittington, both now dec'd. One other third part thereof in William Ewell, son & heir at law of Comfort another devisee who intermarried with Solomon Ewell both since dec'd and the other one third part into three equal parts divided one third part thereof in the said Samuel Beavans, son & heir at law of Elizabeth one of 3 daughters & coheirs of the said Naomi the granddaughter & devisee also dec'd. One other third part in Samuel Matthews, son and heir of Naomi another of the daughters and coheirs of the said Naomi last named also dec'd and the other third part thereof in Ephraim Matthews, son and heir of Comfort the other daughter and coheir of the said Naomi last named also dec'd. That the said Samuel Beavans in order to comply performance of the said agreement herein before set forth has also for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings to him in hand paid by the said George Holden hath bargained and sold to George Holden all that one full third part including the plantation whereon William Beavans, grandfather of the said Samuel, formerly dwelt on the tract of land containing 600 acres be the same more or less lying and being on Wallop's Road in Accomack Co, which by the will of William Beavans the father of the said Samuel now devised to him the said Samuel in fee, also the one sixth part of the following Negro Slaves and their issue which were likewise devised to the said Samuel by his said father after the death or marriage of Mary the widow of the said William (to wit) Negro Toby, Dinah, Phillis, Hope, Leah Aminidab and Isaac. To have and to hold the said one third part of the said Slaves and their increase to him the said George Holden ______ Interest to and for the proper use and behalf of the said Samuel during the natural life of the said Anne the wife of the said George and in case of the death of him the said Samuel during the life of Anne to and for the use of such person or persons as shall be entitled to the possession of the said 1/9 part of the said 950 acres on the death of him the said Samuel by the said will of William during the natural life of the said Anne and after the death of the said Anne for the use of the said George Holden & his heirs forever. Provided also nevertheless that if the said George shall Dock the Entail of the said 950 acres in the lifetime of the said Anne and the said George and Anne convey an estate in fee simple in the said 1/9 part thereof to him the said Samuel or in case of the said Samuel's death unto the person or persons entitled to the possession thereof as aforesaid that _____ Samuel or those in reversions as aforesaid shall convey unto him the said George ____ forever the fee simple estate therein or in case he the said Samuel if he should survive the said Anne and the Entail in the said premises not Docked and the said George Holden then living only the said Samuel shall die in the lifetime of the said Anne the said Entail not Docked the person or persons so entitled to ____ of the said 1/9 part of the said provision to said George Holden then living shall permit and suffer the said George to _______ in the nature of and "AdGUact-Damnum" (a Latin phrase?) or if the said George shall for then dead shall suffer or permit the heirs or assigns of him the said George in the named of him the said Samuel or of the person or persons so entitled to possession of the said 1/9 part of the said premises to Dock the Entail thereof and to convey to the said George and his heirs forever _____________ by the will of William Anderson dec'd, then this indenture and every clause thereof to become utterly void and the said land and slaves to be absolute property of the said Samuel Beavans. (NOTE: George Holden, the husband of Anne Makemie, her now being about 65-70 years old, was evidently buying the rights to home plantation she had inherited only for her lifetime under the entail laid out in her grandfather William Anderson's will of 1698, from those who were expecting to inherit it upon her death.)4

According to Whitelaw, he left the northwestern 120 acres to his son Solomon, the water-front part as 165 acres to son Charles, and the middle portion to his son William..5,2

Anecdote*4 April 1836 On 4 Apr 1836 John S. Ewell, John D. Welbourn Jr. & John B. Ailworth acknowledged a receipt from James J. Ailworth and released him from all liability as a trustee for sale of Samuel S. Carey's property. Witnessed by Thomas Lilliston.9

Anecdotebefore 1 October 1837 John Ewell was granted a 2nd Class Certificate for Land in the Republic of Texas, which required arrival in Texas between 2 Mar 1836 and 1 Oct 1837. He fought at the battle of SJ & along with F.B. Gentry, witnessed the signing of the peace treaty. Both Ewell & Gentry were given land grants for 640 acres each. Ewell by the Land Board of Harris County on 19 Dec 1839 and Gentry by the Land Board of Washington County on 29 May 1844.2

To have and to hold the said one third part of the said Slaves and their increase to him the said George Holden ______ Interest to and for the proper use and behalf of the said Samuel during the natural life of the said Anne the wife of the said George and in case of the death of him the said Samuel during the life of Anne to and for the use of such person or persons as shall be entitled to the possession of the said 1/9 part of the said 950 acres on the death of him the said Samuel by the said will of William during the natural life of the said Anne and after the death of the said Anne for the use of the said George Holden & his heirs forever. Biography*1756He was a justice of peace as early as 1756 and was a member of the Episcopal Church. In 1762 he was appointed by the House of Delegates of Maryland, with Adam Spence and John Selby, Commissioner for the better assessing, ordering, levying, and collecting certain monies, intended for his majesty's service. But the bill ordering this assessment was rejected by the Upper House. In 1788 he deeded to his son and heir at law, William Handy, all his lands in Worcester County, embracing all that tract called "Benefield" in which were included "Handy's Industry" containing 930 acres; "Neighbor's Mistake" containing 445 acres; "Rich Island" containing 60 acres all of which were in Worcester County. He was upwards of 80 years of age at the time of his death.

I also give my said son 10 acres of land on the East side of the tract of land that belongs to me in Pocomoke Swamp, but if my son Ephraim or his heirs shall ever mislist or disturb my son George Mathews or his heirs in the quiet possession of what land I shall hereafter give him. It is my will that my son Ephraim shall not be entitled to any part or parcel of the above devise. But that it shall go and descend to my son George Matthews and his heirs. I also give my son Ephraim Matthews a small black mare that is called his. I give and bequeath to my son George Matthews all the remaining part of the tract or parcel of land that belongs to me in Pocomoke Swamp it being 170 acres to him and his heirs. I also give to my said son, all my right and title to what land I hold on Sexes Island to him and his heirs, only for him to suffer my son Ephraim to pasture his own creatures on there. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah Blake my mare that is called Phillis and my negro woman named Agges and eighth part of my moveable estate and no more. It is also my will and desire that my negro man Jesse shall be sold to best advantage in order to raise money to discharge my just debts and after my just debts are paid, I give and bequeath all the remaining part of my whole estate, that is not already given to be equally divided between my wife Arcady and 4 children, Ephraim, George, Margaret and Comfort. Land inherited*1731He inherited land in 1731 at tract A147, Hallwood-Temperanceville, Acc Co, VA. In 1706 Samuel and Sarah Taylor sold 250 acres of this tract to William Matthews. This was the same William Matthews who had bought the Colley land, and in 1731 (wife Rebecca) he left this parcel to a son John. No disposition by that John was found, but in 1797 the intestate estate of a John Mattews, son of John, administered to a son Evans Matthes. The acreage had grown, as a survey gave 528 acres available for 5 heirs, John Matthews Jr., Elizabeth Allen, Evans Matthews, Margaret Milburn and Hannah Mattews.2

Then in 1787 Thomas and Ann Staton sold the same 60 acres to Warner, the deed stating that as Sophia had left no heirs, the title had passed to her brother Thomas Staton.2
