It was on this date that administration on the estate of Arthur Roberts was granted to Joshua K. Roberts. The widow Lovey Roberts declined her right to administer the estate. Bond $2,500.3

Will - Brother's*5 September 1773William was named in his brother's will on 5 September 1773 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as brother William Groten in the will of Shadrack Groten. 
Will - Father's*24 September 1774William was named in his father's will on 24 September 1774 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as son William Groten in the will of William Groten, wife Amy.1 
Land inherited*1774He inherited land in 1774 at tract A35, Pungoteague Creek, Accomack Co, VA. In 1759 Esther Lecatt, wife of Charles, gave a deed of release to William Groten for 102 acres which "he had purchased of Charles Lecatt." The land was at the southeastern or lower end of the tract. In 1774 Groten left to his son William, who 3 years later left to his brother Jonathan. In 1784 Jonathan sold to Thomas Jacob, and 10 years later he resold to Samuel Trader, who was accumulating land in that vicinity.2 
Will*6 June 1777William made a will on 6 June 1777 at Accomack Co, VA. To brother Zerobabel Groten plantation where my mother & I live, containing 175 acres. To brother Jonathan Groten my plantation called Charles Lecates, containing 102 acres, Zerobabel Groten to pay his brother Edmund Groten 40 £ & Jonathan to pay his brother Edmund 20 £, which said sums make up the amount I was to pay by my father's will. The public house with the privileges now belonging to be enjoyed by Benjamin Hutcheson for the present year & the year following, he accounting for it at the rate he now gives of 30 L - per year, & the money & the 50 £ owing me by Major Colony & all my corn to be sold & the money to be divided between my 3 sisters, Margaret Hutcheson, Patience Rodgers & Amy Groten. My mother to enjoy all the houses where she now lives durihg her nat. life. To friend John Rowles. Brother Zerobabel Groten residual legatee. John Rowles & Benjamin Hutcheson Exrs. Witt: Edward Ker, John Watson, Robert Andrews, Annamariah Andrews.3

Witness paid to be29 August 1759John was paid for being a witness on 29 August 1759 at Accomack Co, VA. Hancock Nickles Rowles (attorney: Littleton Dennis), sued Frederick Major, who was found not guilty of trespass and assault; Major was to recover his costs, 352 lbs tobacco (CaSa: 30 Aug 1759). Major’s witnesses John Major, Caleb Major and John Read each attended two days.4

Rev War Veteran*February 1776He served in the Revolutionary War in February 1776. George Oldham, was a Lieut. in the Va. Contl. Line. In this case it appears that Lieut. Oldham entered the services in Feb 1776 making a service of seven years and nine months to the end of the war. He was allowed by a former executive land bounty for the war. The present executive cannot allow additional (26 Mar 1840). At a Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, 29 July 1840. Certified that George Oldham was an officer in the Rev. War and died intestate 1789 or 1790, leaving five children: (1) Betsey; (2) Sally: (3) Rosetta; (4) Samuel; and (5) Leroy. (1) Betsy married George Wise and died about 1813, intestate, leaving six children: Cassa, Ann, Fanny, Mary, Betsey and Thomas. Cassa married Isaiah Baker; Ann married James Dennis; Fanny married James Harrell; Mary married Thomas Murphy; Betsey married William Graves and died 1825-26 intestate, leaving one child, William Graves. (2) Sally Oldham married Robert Ashby and is now living (1840). (3) Rosetta Oldham married Elijah White and is living. (4) Samuel Oldham died about 1820, leaving one child, George Oldham. (5) Leroy died about the same year, leaving three children: Montcalm, Leroy and George Oldham, and that the persons above mentioned are the only heirs a law of George Oldham. Copy teste, Wm. G. Burton now resides & the residue of that tract of land which I purchased of John M. Poulson of which I devised to my son Thomas & daughter Margaret 20 acres each, the residue to be about 100 acres. To said trustees my water grist mill & 22 acres near the head of Assawoman Creek & my Negro woman Nanny & Easter & boy Colly & the property conveyed to me by John B. Burton to receive the payment for his bonds for $873.78 dated 2 Jun 1821 for the use of my daughter Sarah P. Burton during her natural life without her husband, the said John B. Burton, having any control over the same. My trustees to pay Revell Twiford the annuity of $15 which he is entitled for his interest in the land above devised to said trustees. To granddaughter Elizabeth Sarah Poulson the land on which Erastus Poulson now resides containing 76 aces & 1/3 of my water grist & saw mill called Poulson's mills & 1/3 of 7 acres adjoining thereto & Negro girl Edy & woman Mahala. It was because of this great affection for her that he left her his property, after the death of his mother. When she later married George Parker her own feeling of affection and gratitude prompted then to give the present name of Kendall Grove to the plantation.6

It was in this year that Rachel (Bagwell) Kellam, widow of Jesse Kellam, placed 170 aces of tract A66 (east of Locustville) in trust with her father-in-law John Kellam. This was for her life, to allow her to bring up her children, and then it was to go to a son, Thomas Bagwell Kellem. In 1808 at her request the land was surveyed as 168 acres, with the notation that it was formerly the land of John Bagwell, supposed to be dec'd. This was the same land that John Bagwell bought from Gertrude Harmanson in 1729. Then in 1747 he sold to William Kellam and 6 years later he and his wife Susanna resold to Thomas Bagwell. In 1771 Thomas Bagwell and wife Sophia left to his son John, but if he had no heir, then to a son Thomas, with a daughter Rachel next in succession.3 
Death*before 1 May 1821Rachel died before 1 May 1821 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Rachel Kellam was granted to Abel Garrison & James Shield with George P. Bagwell & Smith R. Carmine securities..1,4

To James Wharton, the son of James Wharton dec'd, my sea side land adjoining the lands of James Shield & at his death to his heirs & if none, then to John W. Edmunds the son of James Edmunds. To Elizabeth Chance $40 to be left in the hands of James Edmunds to be applied to the schooling of the above Elijah Chance. (Note: There is the inconsistency between Elizabeth & Elijah Chance in the will book.) To John Chance $20 to be left in the hands of James Edmunds to be applied to the schooling of the said John Chance. The residue to Anne Edmunds my sister. Friend James Edmunds Extr. Witt: William D.
