Deposition of John Sturgis, Jr., aged about 19 years: On the ninth of this month, John Sturgis, Sr., had been in the pasture and had brought horses to the house. He told John that he had seen a deer in the pasture; they decided "to go into the pasture and there stand to kill the deer, and also my father did advise my two brothers, William and Richard Sturgis, to go into the pasture another way to drive the deer thence, supposing the deer would come by either [me] or by [my] father, my two brothers before named, being each of them upon a mare." They "had not long been upon the design" when John heard a gunshot. He went toward the noise, supposing his father had killed a deer, but when he got there, he "saw his father with my brother William Sturgis in his arms, my father crying and lamenting in a distracted condition, and immediately [I] mounted the mare and took my brother William before me and carried him home, and presently my father sent me to Gargaphia to fetch some comfortable means for my brother Wm.
