Land bought*1722Thomas James bought land in 1722 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year that Thomas James bought 400 acres of tract N116 (on the Bay Side near Jamesville) from Obedience Johnson, this was the strip north of N116A extending from the western to the eastern bounds of his land. The next year James received a patent for it as 284 acres, apparently all that could be found by a survey. When he later died intestate he was succeeded by a son Robet. In 1738 Obedience Johnson left to his son Richard 75 acres that I recovered by law of Thomas James Executrix. A record of such a suit could not be found, nor any disposition by the son Robert, but 5 years later one John Riggs sold it to Robert James as 77 acres, saying he had bought it from Richard Johnson. Robert James also died intestate and was succeeded by a a son Thomas James, who added this to his holdings by acquiring a part of N103, but he also died intestate in 1818.7

Levin is listed as next of kin, along with his brother, Theophilus Marshall, at the administration of the estate of Esme Marshall, their uncle, on October 5, 1784, Worcester Co., MD. 1790 census shows a Levin Marshall, p. 57, Dorchester Co. MD 1M16+, 1F, and 10 slaves. This Levin Marshall is two pages away from Theophilus Marshall. In 1799, Levin and Henry bought a lot in East New Market. In 1799, Henry Marshall sold furniture. In 1801, John Stevens, Esq. and his wife Frances purchased a lot in East New Market from Levin Marshall (Frances Stevens was the widow of Levin's brother, John) (Dorcester Co. land records 19.207, 209). A Levin Marshall m. 4/30/1785 Dor. Rosanna Stokes and had son, William B. Marshall d. 1863 Lawrence Co., AR, m. 10/31/1831 Atlantic Hillhouse Davis, and they had a son, Charles Tillman Marshall 1832AR-1918MO, who m. Mary Wells.2

A James Marshall m. 1817 Nancy Davis. 1800 census of Dorchester shows a James, p. 9, b. 1774-1784. If the age is correct, this James is too young to be son of Thomas John Marshall.
