In his will Abraham Costin requested that my executor herein after named should sell my plantation laying in the lower end of said county adjoining the lands of William Dixon and others. I lend unto my beloved wife Mary Costin the remainder of my estate both real and personal until the first day of January eighteen hundred and thirty for the purpose of supporting herself and the young children which may not be able to support themselves. Should my wife Mary survive the first day of January eighteen hundred and thirty I then lend unto her one third of my plantation recently purchased of William Savage laying on Old Plantation Creek and the houses and mill thereon and one third of my slaves. I desire that the remainder of my lands and slaves should be let out from year to year and the balance of my personal estate be immediately sold for the benefit of my children that I now have or may have by my said wife Mary until said Mary's death, then the whole both land and slaves and personal property to be sold and out of the sales thereof I give unto my said children that I have or may have by my said wife Mary each of them one thousand dollars including what they may receive before that time, the balance of my estate should there be any, I desire may be equally divided between my son Patrick F. Land bought*1835James Bell (of Severn E) Nottingham bought land in 1835 at tract N17, between Capeville & Cheriton, Northampton Co, VA. In 1832 after the death of Southy Goffigon, his widow Esther and son Nathaniel joined with the executors in a sale of 245 acres to William P. Nottingham. There were several other owners in the 3 years following the above sale, and in 1835 the property was acquired by James B. Nottingham. An existing house (N17C) with one brick end is called Oak Grove and probably was erected by James B. Nottingham soon after his purchase of this land.4

All of which land, both of John Elliott and his widow Polly, is situate in Northampton County. That at the time of her death she left four children John Elliott, Nancy Smaw, Polly Elliott and Rosey Elliott, they being the same four children that were of the said John Elliott, deceased..3

Two years since Captian Downes had to go to St. Vincent's Hospital, Norfolk, for an operation for blood poisoning. His left arm war amputated, and not-withstanding he was 81 years old, he stood it with great courage and recovered.1,2
