Will - Father's*5 January 1803William was named in his father's will on 5 January 1803 at Northampton Co, VA. In his will John Parsons Senr gave to son William Parsons forty six acres of land whereon he now lives forever, also one half the land whereon the wind mill stands and half the mill. I give my son Thomas Parsons one hundred and one acres of land which I bought of John Trower forever also a Negro girl Leah and her increase and Cesar my Negro carpenter. I give my son John Parsons the land bought of Reuben Joine with an addition of about 20 acres making in all about eighty acres also a Negro woman named Adah. I give to my son Marrot Parsons the land I had of George Smith containing by estimation one hundred acres also a Negro named Tully. All the remaining part of my estate I leave to be equally divided between my six children; William Parsons, Mary Costin, Esther Smith's children, Thomas Parsons, John Parsons and Marrot Parsons. I leave my two sons William and Thomas Parsons my executors. Signed, John Parsons. Witnesses: Nathaniel Goffigon, William Havard, John Collins and Henry Costin. In probate, the validity of the will was contested by Mathew Costin but was judged to be valid.3

In his will Severn Nottingham gave to son Julius Nottingham the tract upon which I now reside containing about 109 acres. I also give my said son Julius seventy acres of wood land to be laid off of the land I purchased of Severn E. Parker beginning at the county road and taking the said seventy acres between the land of Mrs. Margaret Read and the cleared land I bought of said Severn E. Parker. And in the event of the death of my said son Julius under the age of twenty one years I give the above mentioned tract of land and the seventy acres of wood land to my surviving son and daughters. I give all the rest of my land to my son Ellison Nottingham. But if my said son should die under the age of twenty one years I give the land hereby given to him my son Ellison to my surviving son and daughters. I give all my slaves equally to be divided between my daughters Peggy Nottingham and Harriett Susan Nottingham and in the event of the death of either of my said daughters under the age of twenty one years and unmarried I give the share of the one so dying to the surviving daughter and my two sons. Wife Rosa Nottingham. My brothers Thomas Nottingham and Jacob Nottingham should have the custody, care and education of my sons after they attain the age of eight years or earlier if their mother should be willing to part from them. I give to my two sons Littleton & Henry Hyslope the plantation whereon I now live, the east end to Littleton and western to Henry, to be divided by a line running nearly a south course from a gum a corner tree between me & John Parsons. I leave in the hands of my son John Hyslope a Negro boy Joe to be hired out yearly with the money arising there from to be paid to my daughter Nancy Hyslope during her life. I also leave a Negro woman Judy in the hands of my son John Hyslope. I give unto my daughter Sukey Hyslope two Negro boys Mathew & Jesse. In 1741 Sarah Webb, widow of Charles, sold her 130 acres of this tract to Matthew Floyd and he resold to Michael Waterfield, who sold it to Esau Jacob in 1745 and he sold it 2 years later to Robert Trower. In 1860 John T. Collins bought all of the Trower land as 329 acres.7

Land sold by com'ers*1883He's land was sold by commissioners in 1883 at tract N3, souther tip, Bay Side, Northampton Co, VA. A special commissioner sold the house and 229 acres to the heirs of Denard Fitchett, who had contracted to buy before his death. In 1886 another commissioner, acting for the Fitchett heirs, sold to Francis Parsons, John W. Parsons and George E. White. In 1900 Francis and Susan A. Parsons, and John W. and Mary R. Parsons sold their two-thirds interest in the Collins Farm to James H. and Minnie S. Latimer, and in 1917 they bought the other third from George E. and Emma White, that deed calling it the Trower Farm.7

Land survey named*1795Shadrack Travis's name was shown on a survey plat in 1795 at tract N6, Cedar Grove, Northampton Co, VA. In 1787 Ann Roberts sold 3 acres of this tract to John Graves and 8 years later 44 acres more. In 1794 she sold 50 acres to William Parsons and 101 acres to John Trower. In 1795 she sold 51 acres to Henry Costin. In this same year surveys were made of all of her land here, the plantation being called "Sydas." The above sales were shown and in addition 216 acres were laid out for Shadrach Travis, 22 acres more for John Graves, and 100 acres for John Griffin.3 
Tax list (personal)*4 April 1812He was on the personal property tax list on 4 April 1812 at Northampton Co, VA. This was his first and only appearance on the list. He had no tithables.4 
Will*4 January 1815Shadrack made a will on 4 January 1815 at Northampton Co, VA. In his will Shadrack Travis gave wife Rachel Travis one third of my land to her for life. I give first choice of my gun to Shadrack Travis, second choice to Messack Travis. I give Precilla Travis six shillings. I give my daughter Rachel Travis six shillings. I give Rebecca Travis six shillings. I give Elliot Travis six shillings. I leave my land to be equally divided between Dennard Travis, William Travis, Shadrack Travis & Messack Travis, Margaret Travis & Polley Travis and leave William Goffigon my executor. Signed with his mark, Shadrack Travis. Witnesses: William Dixon and Henry Costin.5 
Death*before 11 September 1815He died before 11 September 1815 at Northampton Co, VA. This will was partly proven on September 11, 1815 and was finally proven on February 12, 1816. The executor, William Goffigon declined the administration. Denard Travis was granted administration. Bond $300. Appraisers: William Parsons, Thomas Graves, John Graves and Abraham Costin. Evans, dec'd, did on or about the 4 of January 1815, duly make and publish his last will and testament in writing, by which he devised the aforesaid tract of land to be equally divided between his children viz: your orators and Peggy, Molly, Shadrack and Meshack Travis, as by the said will will appear. That after the making of the said will aforesaid, on the ___ day of ___ the said Shadrack Travis departed this life. That the said will was duly proved and admitted to record on the 12 day of February, 1816, in the Court of the County of Northampton as will more fully appear by the records thereof. That after the death of the said Travis, the testator, all the devisees entered upon the premises and so there in Parcenary held the same subject, however to the dower Rachel Travis, the widow of the said Shadrack Travis, the testator, &c. -------.6

William Travis, William Warren and Peggy his wife, Shadrack Travis and Meshack Travis and Molly Travis, by said William Travis, their next friend (guardian) vs. Dennard Travis, suit for division of land. That a certain Shadrack Travis, late of the County of Northampton, departed this life on the ___ day of __, 18__, leaving a will, being at the time of his death seized in fee simple of a certain tract of land in the county aforesaid. That at the time of the death of said Shadrack Travis left other children as well as your orators and oratrixes; you orators and oratrixes have the following names, to-wit: William Travis, Shadrack Travis, William Warren and Peggy his wife, and Meshack Travis and Molly Travis aforesaid, and Dennard Travis is also son of Shadrack Travis dec'd. At the death of the said Shadrack Travis his land went according to his will to your orators and oratrixes and Dennard Travis aforesaid, which land has since been divided in equal parts to them as the will aforesaid gave it, leaving to the widow Rachel Travis, her dower, which was found on survey to be 47 1/2 acres.
