D. B. Prettyman preached the funeral sermon of James W. Hancock and David Tilghman at the same time. Both bodies were brought into the church at practically the same time and the friends and families of both men were mourners as they viewed the two caskets in front of the altar of
Beth Eden Church. These two men had lived in the same neighborhood for more than a half century. They were friends and neighbors and they died within a half an hour of each other. Mr. Hancock was 89 years of age and leaves the following children: Alfred C., James, Darius, Mrs. Obed Jones, and Mrs. Tabitha Beauchamp. Mr. Tilghman is survived by his sons, Hillary, Clarence, Chestnut, and David. He was a brother of Mr. Robert Tilghman, of Beth Eden. The funerals were attended by a large number of people..2

She was born May 1892, and died 2 May 1973. Notes for WILLIAM JAMES PAYNE: Occupation: Lumber mill owner; owned farms and rental properties William was often identified by people in conversation as "Short Will" Payne so as to avoid confusion with another William Payne, who was, however, quite
tall in comparison. "Tall Will" was in fact William Harvey Payne,

William claims Virginia as the place of birth of his mother, but both he and his father were born in Maryland. The first two children were born in Virginia, as was their mother. In the 1920 Census, Brinkman asserts that both parents were born in Virginia. WD, March 16, 1929: Stockton News: Mr. and Mrs. William J. Payne, and family motored to Salisbury, Sunday, to see the former's son, Brinkman, who was in the hospital having undergone a tonsil operation. William J. Payne, as will appear by reference to a deed and agreement between us dated Nov. 11, 1943, and recorded in JEB 19, 124, whereby, among other things, she released all her right, title, interest, and estate in and to all of my property, and, since the execution of said deed and agreement, I have also caused my home place to be held by us as tenants by the entireties, whereby at my death she etc, etc.
