Mariner in 2015 was awarded the Society of Alumni's Distinguished Alumnus Award at the Boydton Society's annual meeting at Randolph-Macon. The award honors alumni who have achieved wide recognition through contributions made to society through their chosen professions. Most people on the Eastern Shore likely know Mariner through his books, including the popular "Off 13: The Eastern Shore of Virginia Guidebook," "True Tales of the Eastern Shore," "Glimpses of a Vanished Eastern Shore," "Once Upon an Island: The History of Chincoteague," "Almost an Island: The History of Saxis, Virginia," "God's Island: The History of Tangier" and his first book, "Revival's Children," published in 1978, among others. The last volume is considered the definitive book on religion of the Eastern Shore. In 2015, he published "Slave and Free," a groundbreaking study of slavery and interracial relations on the Eastern Shore between the Revolution and the Civil War. Historian Brooks Miles Barnes, who coincidentally lives next door to Mariner's Onancock home, called the book "Kirk Mariner's most important work since 'Revival's Children." Mariner recently released another book that Barnes said will be a valuable resource for researchers. The volume, "Free Blacks of Accomack County, Virginia, 1782-1864," is an alphabetical compilation of references to free blacks found in local records. Mariner wrote in the introduction that he hoped the book would benefit researchers into the genealogies of the Eastern Shore's African American families. "May this work prove to be at least a small step towards the long overdue inclusion of African Americans in the history of our Eastern Shore of Virginia," he wrote. Mariner was working on a companion volume for Northampton County when he died. Mariner's books are available at the Book Bin in Onley, where he was a near-daily visitor to the coffee nook. Mariner was a regular contributor to the Eastern Shore News, which over the years published dozens of articles he submitted on topics as diverse as an 1814 sermon preached by a Methodist minister on Tangier to British soldiers during the War of 1812, to an incident - one of many over the decades - when the Eastern Shore was omitted from a Virginia map. Mariner also was known as a musician, often in recent years playing piano and singing at benefit performances for local charities, including Habitat for Humanity and Market Street United Methodist Church. He spoke about his life's work as a minister and a historian - and about his love of music - in a 2016 interview with the Eastern Shore News. "Over the years, I have worked hard on those two things. I've worked hardest on being a good preacher ... In comparison, music comes easily to me - it's a gift," he said. Mariner started taking piano lessons at age 6 and at 10 discovered he could play the piano by ear. He treasured the Yamaha grand piano he purchased in 1973 in lieu of buying a new automobile, which still dominated the front parlor of his home nearly a half century later. At his performances, people often prevailed on Mariner to play selections from his 2003 compact disc, "Church Basement Songs: Songs not Quite Reverent Enough for Upstairs." The cover for that disc was photographed at Historic Cokesbury Church in Onancock. Mariner also for years taught a popular adult Sunday School class, known for the group's lively discussions, at Market Street UMC. Carol Vaughn, cvvaughn@delmarvanow.com.
