Anecdote*6 May 1854 On the 6th of May last, a correspondent of the Petersburg Express states that James Ames, (a minor) got into a difficulty with Mr. George East, his step-father, and seized a gun to shoot him, but through the entreaties of his mother was prevailed upon to desist. He thereupon drew a large butcher's knife and gave chase to East, who had started to run. Overtaking the object of his pursuit, he stabbed him behind till he fell, when the assassin got upon and literally cut him to pieces - ripping out the bowels from the breast down - cutting him in the breast, laying open his heart an inch or two, and stabbing and gashing him in a number of places. After the blood-thirsty monster had left him, fearing as he says, that he was not dead, he returned, propped the body up against a fence, and cut the throat from ear to ear, the wound extending entirely through the windpipe, and disjointing the neck. The trial of this cruel murderer has recently taken place before the circuit court of Accomac county, and the jury have rendered a verdict of murder in the second degree, affixing his punishment at eighteen years' imprisonment in the public jail and penitentiary house. He was defended by able counsel - the Hon. Henry A. Wise making one of the most powerful and thrillingly eloquent appeals in his behalf ever listened to. That his neck has been spared is a matter of universal surprise.6

He alleged, in his defense, that his mother had been ill-treated by the deceased, but it is thought they had fallen out about the property of Mrs. East, the parties were heretofore respectable, and in good circumstances. It is also stated that it will be difficult to prevent the populace from lynching the prisoner, the excitement is so great.7
