Land inherited*1773He inherited land in 1773 at Accomack Co, VA. Whitelaws says no record of the death of Richard Kellam III was noted, but in later years sales of adjacent lands gave the owner of this property as a John Kellam, who died in 1773 leaving a wife Bridget and a son George as heir-at-law. The latter died in 1819 and the next year his land was surveyed for a division among the numerous heirs; his holding totaled 384 acres, including a large part of the land north of the crossroad which had been acquired by him or his fahter. The home and 7 acres went to a Hulton Kellam, who bought up the interests of some of the other heirs. In 1858 a commissioner sold 300 acres of the late Hulton Kellam to Samuel K. Shield and because of his ownership the post office called Shield's later came into being, as well as Shield's Wharf on the creek, which ceased to exist following the demise of the steamboat traffic. After the death of Shield, his large holdings were divided amon his heirs, followed by some inter-family transactions, resulting in Alfred H. Shield becoming the owner of the home place of 115 acres. In 1938 a commissioner sold the property to Francis C. Duer and his wife Billye Atkinson Duer and 2 years later they sold as 122 acres to Lucius J. and Dorothy D. Kellam, thus bringing this land back into the Kellam family once more. Tract A15B is known as Mount Pleasant. A little salt-box-type house burned in 1938. Its age was unknown, but it may have gone back to 1722 when this part of the land was allotted to Richard Kellam III. The present owners have built a substantial moder home nearby.4

In Chancery, we the subscribers have proceeded to sell and divide the slaves in said decree mentioned equally between Ptfs & Defts, as per the annexed statement. viz. James was sold to Edward Joynes for £87 and Major was sold to Edward Joynes for £91.10. aand have paid each of the parties £25.10 being the heirs part of the slaves. Given under our hands 31 Jan 1801: Will. Satchell & Charles F. Satchell. (NOTE: The will of John Joynes Sr. recorded at Will Bk 27, p. 178, N'hamp Co, left to daughter Margaret one Negro boy named James. It is reasonable to assume that the slave named James, sold to Edward Joynes was the same one left to Margaret (Peggy) by the will of her father in 1784. Birth*February 1750Esau was born in February 1750 at Northampton Co, VA. In her 1987 report to E. Spencer Wise (1914-1995) entitled "The Immediate Ancestors of Esau Jacob (1750-1797)," Mary Francis Carey concluded that Esau Jacob, born Feb 1750 and named for his father's uncle Esau, was the son of John Jacob (1728-1751) and his wife Mary (Abdell?), who was the son of John Jacob Junr (1707-1728), who was the son of John Jacob (c1675- 1729/30). Esau Jacob was raised by his father's uncle Thomas Jacob (c1722-1795), who had a son named Teackle of approximately Esau's age. It is suggested that Esau named a son Teackle after him, his father's first cousin. He would have considered Teackle as close as a brother. The records she searched gave no indication as to why Thomas Jacob named one of his sons Teackle..1,2
Est Settm't Father's*27 August 1751He was named in the settlement of his father's estate on 27 August 1751 at Northampton Co, VA. A division of the estate of John Jacob dec'd was presented on 25 Aug 1751 by Mary Jacob and signed by John Walter, Arthur Downing and Salathiel Harrison. Thomas Jacob was one of the few debtors. After debts were paid, the estate was divided between the widow Mary and Esau Jacob, orphan. The latter's part was appraised at £6.12.7.3
Bound Out*12 September 1758He was bound out on 12 September 1758 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Esau Jacob, aged "8 years last February," orphan of John Jacob, was bound to Thomas Jacob. (NOTE: Thomas would have been his great-uncle, the brother of his grandfather John Jacob Junr.)4,2
Marriage*circa 1775He married (-----) (-----) circa 1775 at Northampton Co, VA.1
Will - Mentioned in*13 November 1776Esau was mentioned in a will on 13 November 1776 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as Easu Jacobs and given a felt hat in the will of Benjamin Heath.5
Marriage*21 October 1789He married Margaret 'Peggy' (of John Sr) Joynes, daughter of John (of Edward) Joynes Sr. and Rachel Andrews, on 21 October 1789 at Northampton Co, VA. Jacob Abdell was the security on the M.L.B. of Esau Jacob and Margaret Joynes..6
Will*10 January 1797Esau made a will on 10 January 1797 at Northampton Co, VA. To beloved wife Margaret my whole estate during her widowhood and then to be eq. div. between the whole of my children that is lawfully begotten of my body. To son Teagle Jacob all my clothes. My son Teagle Jacob and William Jones extrs. Witt: Daniel Luke, John Turpin.7

Chancery suit*1 December 1801He was named in a chancery suit on 1 December 1801 at Northampton Co, VA. In obedience to a decree of the court of Northampton County to us directed bearing the date the 1st December 1801 between Peggy, John, & Mary Jaocb, Ptfs and Sally, Nancy, Teackle & Arthur Jacob, Defts. It is also very likely that the purchaser of the two salves was the Edward, brother of Margaret, named in the will of John Joynes Sr.)8
